Sorry, hab geschlafen. Check the foreign policy of the Ukraine over the last 10-15 years, I'm honestly too lazy to look for sources with my crappy internet, but if I'm honest I know most of this from books I borrowed from the library near by and it was all in German -_-"
What's important to note is that in the minds of the Ukrainians (as with the rest of Europe thanks to the way BBC and CNN have been wording things) you can either be pro-European or pro-Russian. They're mutually exclusive and therefore if Ukraine draws closer to Russia it will inevitably have the means to push Russia out. Oh and the fact that many Ukrainian governments since 1990's have been trying.
That egg pelting that I mentioned? It was because parliament passed a treaty to allow the Russia to station their Black Sea fleet yet another 50 years in the Ukraine.
