Hey everyone, so I've decided after the success of my last rapid strategic 1v1 tournament, I will do another one. I decided to make another post to give a better description for these tourneys in the future since I've done some more testing and theorizing for this style of play.
Rapid strategy is inspired by the rapid chess variant used in chess tournaments, generally as a tiebreaker. I feel like many strategic games overlook the affect of boot timers and can lead to interesting strategies and gameplay when changed. I've thought about something new to spice up typical tournaments in a way that I don't think any other tournament has tried doing. I know I'm not the first to ever change the timers for games so they're faster, but this tournament will be something that I hope more people take interest in and try doing as well.
In rapid chess, Instead of the regular 60 minutes each player has, it is lowered to 15 minutes. To replicate this, I attempted to use a similar percentage for the turns for strat 1v1. Instead of the 10 minutes (5+5 banked), i lowered it down to 2 minutes with 0 banked. My reasoning is that the banked time is rarely used anyways and will be too much of an extension. The 2 minutes while short should not be too fast to completely change the strategies, but forces players to plan and analyze much quicker than usual. As time goes by, I will see what other changes can be done.
These tournaments will be public to anyone who fits my requirements: Level 10 with a less than 10% boot rate and a minimum 1v1 win percentage of 40%. I attempted to find a balance so newer players can join and have fun but make it so the games are not lopsided and rely on boots over skill. There will be coins involved: Fizzer was generous enough to give me some coins for this but I will try to gain more coins of my own in the future, through mobile and attempting to win tournaments myself.
This thread will be constantly updated by myself for when new tournaments are made, which will generally be when I do my streams on Friday and give a 30 minute window to join. Hope to see you all there and good luck and have fun :D
The first tournament will be this Friday, December 21. It will start in 4 pm EST (9 pm UTC). The template will be Strategic 1v1 aka the 1v1 ladder template. I'm using something basic at first since nearly everyone is familiar with the map. I'll link the tournament when I set it up, but if you are interested, let me know here or by mail and I can send an invite directly so you get a spot.
This is a really cool concept! I'll pop some coins to it if you ever find yourself stuck. I would recommend linking a time conversion link just in case people get their times wrong.
Thanks to everyone who joined! I noticed a lot of games had lots of boots. It may be due to the timer, but on the other hand it might also be due to the people who joined, as many had low levels. I might do some more experimenting for next time but I hope people enjoyed it. I will use a different template this time to change it up.
Alright everyone we're back! The next rapid strategy tournament will be on Friday, January 4 at 3 PM EST. The template being used will be Guiroma. Following feedback from the previous tournament, I decided to extend the timer from 2 minutes to adding an extra minute banked, like the first time. I am also considering trying to make it one flat banked timer (say 15 minute banked) but I feel like that can cause a few issues. As always I will link the tournament 30 minutes before to start. Hope to see you there :D
Also, since I know many people don't live in North America, for those of you in Europe, the tournament will start at 9 pm CET. Hope that helps in case of any confusion for the time it starts.
