Okay so I've just looked back on the history of this ladder game between me and Hudsoncactus (Where I got totally pounded), and I noticed something odd about the picks. I had South Pole marked as my third pick, and Hudson had it as his fourth. One of his earlier picks had been taken by me (Jiangxi, his second pick and my first). Yet he got the territory, instead of him getting his fifth pick (Colombia).

By my understanding, he should have got Colombia and not the South Pole. Was that supposed to happen, or do they alternate (I got priority over his second pick, so he gets priority over his next one)?

I've never really payed much attention to that sort of thing before (Which is probably why I lose so many ladder games!), so I'm probably missing something obvious.

you got your 1-2 and he lost his 2. so he gets his 4

but you losing your third pick is not why you lost the game. your gameplay was much weaker than his. you got your first income on turn 5.

I had a feeling that was the case, thanks for confirming ;)

Yeah, that certainly wasn't an encouraging start. Some days I just have noob days, xD

Picks and move order work as a cycle (in this template): A BB AA B.

When the game started it was randomly decided who is A and who is B. In this case you were B.

Picking process:

(A) hudsoncactus gets his 1st pick;
(BB) Tristan gets his 1st and 2nd, because his opponent didn't take any of them;
(AA) hudsoncactus gets his 3rd and 4th, because Tristan took his 2nd previously;
(B) Tristan gets his 5th, because his 3rd, 4th and 5th picks were already taken by hudsoncactus.

Picks go as following:

Person A receives pick 1
Person B receives pick 1, 2
Person A receives pick 2, 3
Person B receives pick 3

When picks are denied, that's still the order of picks; hence if he was person A in this scenario, he received his first pick, then you received your first two picks, giving him the next two picks, while denying him east china, giving him his 3 & 4. That denies you antarctica, and scandinavia as well, giving you your 5th pick.

Had priority been the other way around, you'd have gained your 1 first, then he his 1 & 3, and you'd have gotten Antarctica, giving him South America.

If you don't want to be a noob, train with some decent to good players.
