The challenges indeed are quite difficult! Try starting it over a few times until you find a start position you like. That and practice, practice, practice. They are both beatable :)

It was pretty hard. I got through in a maybe 3 tries, but with many restarts.
I used a pretty shifty strategy of restarting until I got the optimal starting spot. In my opinion, the best spot is somewhere in Africa where you can secure a region in 2 turns. Chad, Ethiopia, and Cameroon are best. Botswana, Algeria, Niger, Mauritania, Namibia and Mali all work just fine as well. What you are looking for is a country that is in the center of the region and a path for your 2 initial armies to go out on.
It is best when no AI spawns in Africa with you, but I actually won when I had somebody in the north of Africa coming down from Europe. If you have an early region, you'll end up overpowering them quickly.
So here's a little breakdown I guess of what to do:
1)Get a great spawn in Africa
2)Secure a region in 2 turns
3)Secure the northern chokepoints ASAP
4)Lock down the rest of the regions in Africa
5)Expand SOUTH to Antartica
6)Secure the eastern chokepoint and control the region
7)Expand north into South America
8)Continue into North America
By this time, you should be well set.
One VERY important note is that you should NEVER move your forces out of Algeria and Egypt. Just keep piling them up and stay a shade about the enemy across from you. The defender's bonus is way too valuable to give up. I didn't move those forces out until I was locking East Russia through Alaska and breaking into Greenland.
I think I could easily replicate this strategy b/c it never came down to any decisive battles. . . Now for Challenge 2, I'VE GOT NO CLUE. I've tried fast expanding, I've tried securing Asia/Middle East, I've tried rushing to get Abandoned spaces set up, I've tried so much shit and nothing works. I get overpowered on every front simultaneously....

ittasteskikecandy - SNAP, yes I am new to this (very good) site of the good old risk game, and am finding it hard to progress, so you are not alone mate. Arctic69, I actually thought I had Cracked it when I started off In Africa, I whacked all of them out of the Continent, put a 30 strong army into Spain to see what was there, locked up Egypt, 20 strong army in Brazil. Was doing quite nicely in Antartica, when all of a sudden. 40 and 50+ armies appeared on all fronts at once. Christ I felt like launching my lappy out of the bl00dy window. 13 games in and I am getting so frustrated. Even managed to work out how to use the surrender and history tabs to watch the 'bots' do it. Havent quite worked out (or got the nerve, more than likely) to join the multi player games.....But one day.......Thanks for the info, will keep rebooting until I get back into Africa, at the moment, I'm getting my @rse kicked in Russia (AGAIN Grrrrrrrrrrrr) .....Pete

Anybody else seriously p1ssed off with this one, I live chatted with Randy before I got a system crash and was asking how the hell one of the AI managed to get over 3 continetns in 5 moves. I did do it (honest) but I realised I wasn't signed in, so it did'nt count. Still wondering how the hell the AI's get massive 20+ armies, when on sucidal forays into enemy territories they dont seem to hold anything. I've tried raiding in Asia, Europe and the USA, they never seem to hold Bonus lands but still come out of the woodwork with these big armies...seriously annoyed, up for work in 3.5 hours but still wide awake !!!!!!!!!!!!!...I HATE AI's....pete

I've beaten challenge 1 before, but not challenge 2. Stil I practice on cahllenge 1 to try ot get better. I just started a game, and at the end of turn 1 I could see AI 4. on turn 2 and turn 3 the AI produced 11 armies per turn (that I saw). This just doesn't seem right..

This is ridiculous. If I expand too early, I'm screwed. If I sit and consolidate armies, I'm screwed. With 2 defenders per space and only getting 5 per turn, there is NO way the AI should be able to accumulate armies of 30 - 50 after 5 or 6 turns.

And once again, my 57-strong army in Egypt was destroyed by a 50-strong army coming from Arabia. Not only that, but once they DID take it, they had 43 armies in Egypt. That's freaking awesome! What happened to the defender bonus?

Arctic69's advice is great. I figured that strategy out fairly quickly and got challenge 1 my 3rd attempt.
Tried the same stuff for challenge 2, very tough. Just gotta get lucky with what the AI does I guess.

What is wrong with this mental game ?? Got on a great start point. Sudan 10 armies, 5 north to Egypt, took it ended up with 3. 4 south to into Somalia, took it ended up with 2 and bumped into AI5 with 2 in Kenya, AI2 came out of Nigeria and bumped into my Sudan, ending up with 2.. Now this is where it gets insane. AI5 in Kenya with 2 then jumps to 13 armies, yes 13 in ROUND one, 5 of the buggers disapear into Botswana Which means they already had it, 6 go after neutral Congo, take it and end up with 3 and two are left in Kenya..........................HOW DO THEY DO IT ?????

I don't remember how many pieces the reinforcement card is split up into, but if it's 3 pieces, then each AI team is going to get a full card every turn. That's how the AI is able to deploy so many so early.

Impaller, I see your point on 3 thirds of a bonus card for all the AI's in one team getting the bonus 6 armies. But them sw1nes STARTED with 13 in round one before a ball was kicked, not after and on round 2.....?????

I managed to beat challenge 1 but challenge 2 is insane, it just doesnt seem possible to get enough whole regions quickly enough to be able to defend anywhere.
Cant do single player number 4 either, any tips?

As for Challenge 1, my absolute number 1 thing to do in this one is BALANCE. BALANCE BALANCE BALANCE! I cannot stress that enough. In order to keep both teams in check, you have to knock them out 1 at a time, alternating teams. You also have to remember, that the AIs fight each other and you can use that to your advantage. One thing I've found is that starting in the middle (africa, Scandinavia) you have the AI's fighting each other already, and they're pretty split right down the middle. The reason you're seeing such big troops randomly is because that AI team has pretty much taken out the other AI team and they have a lot of income.
Things you should do; Always keep a good defense, even if the AI has only one in their territory because they will test your open spots all game, and if you notice they aren't protecting, go ahead and nab that territory. Getting and keeping bonuses are very key and so slow BALANCED expansion will lead you to victory.
Like Randy said, practice! It helps a lot. Also look at the history and learn from your mistakes. The AI still does the same strategy every game and you can use that to your advantage. The AI also will usually go after Neutral spots before attacking you.
Hope this helps everyone.

After you lose, go back and look through the history to get an idea for what the AIs are doing and how they work. Once you understand how the AIs work, you'll have a lot more success I think.
