[Clan-List Rank] How does it work?: 2014-03-31 06:13:21

I've been trying to figure out how does the Ranking works in the Clan-list? ( http://warlight.net/Clans/List).

I can conclude from checking various Clans to compare and figure out the facts, what I can with 100% conclude is that it cannot be due to :

  • Clan ID (When the Clan was created)
  • Amount of Clan Members
  • Alphabetic order

What I've tried to see but cannot conclude it to 100% is if its calculated due to

  • Amount of active members
  • Amount of views by other members
  • Amount of experience points from total clan-members (probarbly not since my Clan has increased in numbers but havnt raised in the table amongst above less active clans)

Ah so it was that after all. I tought It was but does it start the counter after they joined the clan or does it take in account what he earned before joining?

Yeah, just total points, period. I don't think it is a good system myself (it simply encourages clans spamming others with membership offers), but that is a different discussion that has been had many times.

My honest opinion of the current ranking is that it really shoud be based on something like alphabetical standing, and not nominal figures like the amount of points gained by a clan by all players in a clan.

I wouldn't know any better way to classify other than that.

That isn't any good either (alphabetized), that would just encourage people to put silly special characters in front. There should be a formula that does it based on average points of users (I would probably do a formula that throws out ones more than a certain standard deviation to allow for clans to have developmental players and not be punished there).

If you are not going to do a serious formula, just do it on clan ID. Then it is at least by oldest registered. Points doesn't do anything and it implies an actual ranking.

you are not going to do a serious formula, just do it on clan ID.

The problem is that it's very difficult to create a "serious formula" when there's no official competition system between clans. and sorting by total points have some advantages, for example does it automatically place inactive clans on the bottom. sorting by clan ID would not do that. I'm not saying anything is better/worse, they just have different pros and cons.

Honestly a bad clan would be Illuminati since all they want is to have a lot of members and then troll them. They are more like the current UN.

Well, my proposal is the average points of all members within 2.5 standard deviations of the mean. In normalized data, %95 of values fall within 2.5 standard deviations, so this would grab the average of most of the clan, yet allow for outliers (perhaps someone being trained) not to penalize the clan.

A standard deviation would look like this (AVG_Pts is of entire clan):
√[{(Player1_Pts-AVG_Pts)²+(Player2_Pts-AVG_Pts)²...}/Total_Players]

Then you just multiply that result by 2.5 and add and subtract it from the AVG_Pts. Everyone with a point total between there is used for the clan score (average pts).

Basically, you are just averaging the clan point totals for all but the extreme highs and lows. The only issue would be a clan of very few people (say 3) would be ranked as high as a clan of 20 people with similar point totals. There should be a bonus somehow for number of members, just not what it is now. Maybe multiply that clan score by 1 + (#_Players * 0.01). So if you had 5 players, it would be score x 1.05. If you had 10 players 1.10, 20 players 1.20, 100 players 2.0

That way you still give a boost to clans that have lots of players with lots of points, but it isn't simply a total, which encourages clan spamming. If someone adds a member when they are huge, they will only get a small boost from them unless their points are way above normal.

Yeah, I am dreading when Math Wolf comes here and corrects me :)

I was good at math in college, but have not used it in 15 years so I'm sure I messed something up.

REGL is in favor of sorting by clan ID.

Also, if we used some average system, could we please not count those who have been inactive more than say....20 days? I'm not sure about other clans, but REGL has more than a few players that are inactive, but I don't want to kick them or anything. They're still REGL, and there's always the possibility of them coming back. Most of these players have very little points, and therefor would skew our results. Also, adding players new to the game would drop the rating of the clan, and that shouldn't really be a factor. If a clan is older than 30 days, then any new members they add shouldn't count towards their rating for at least 15 days or something. This would help keep the list more stable, especially for larger clans who add members frequently, and wouldn't hurt smaller clans at all.

I don't agree with going by date. Suppose you add a really good player, would you not want them to count?

My formula (with ignoring outliers) would ignore those inactive people that have very low point totals. It only counts the %95 within 2.5 standard deviations of your clan point average. I have no idea what points to use as an example...since our profiles do not show total points anywhere, even to yourself. Perhaps the formula would need a tweak, I don't know. But I think a math expert could figure out the right formula to use.

Maybe you want to include everything over average and only drop things below -2 Standard Deviations, I don't know. It can be tweaked as I said. The idea is to get an average point value on the bulk of your clan and not just total up all the points.

I like this system for the simple reason that you see how inactive so many noobs can be yet still believe a clan is a good idea. I'm currently the only member of my clan but I'm far from the bottom :D
