http://pridenews.ca/2015/03/11/does-the-mass-media-promote-scaremongering/I found a great article on the internet and it's quite an interesting read. It questions whether mass media is promoting scaremongering. I'm going to give you the article first and then my personal opinion.
A quote from the article:
Almost on a daily basis we are bombarded with distorted messages highlighting and deepening our fears about the imminent threat of terrorism. We are inundated with distorted notions of patriotism. We are flooded with divisive messages that deliberately demonize various individuals and racial groups. And it is commonplace to smear people by taking their words out of context.
my opinion: Tragedy and conflict whether major or minor happen everyday. Each news network with their own perspective and bias,.. It's without a doubt that news sources can put their own spin on a conflict. There is no doubt that the constant repetition of misleading information has given rise to what is referred to as manipulation. Thus, if something is repeated over and over again with a great deal of perceived conviction, many people will tend to believe it, even if what it said is totally false. To apply this notion to the Christchurch mass public shooting, these divisive messages that appear in the news may smear ethnic groups and be used to smear people. similar to the Paris attacks when muslims in particular where being smeared
