Kayleigh was talking about people being rude, without the sad attempt at rationalized "humor".

Even then, I don't see how a failed attempt at humor magically justifies trolling more than general d!ckery. If anything, its immaturity with a purpose, not just immaturity. Which is clearly worse.

Hopefully you can handle another type of opinion, if you aren't too insecure. Don't worry, I'm not returning to this thread. Its run its course. :P

There seems to be a basic fact about satire, irony, and even memes that 80% of the internet (including the manatee guy) doesn’t seem to get. If your attempt at satire is hard to distinguish from the thing you’re trying to parody, then it’s not parody.
If I’m walking down the street with a novelty MAGA hat, where nothing is different except instead of saying ‘Great’ it says ‘Groot’ (from the movies) then everyone beyond 4 feet from me just sees me wearing a MAGA hat, and I’m not being ‘ironic’ I’m just an asshole.
The same can be said for internet ‘discourse.’ Yes there are people being assholes to be assholes, but that isn’t any different than someone looking like an asshole who is ‘actually an intelligent person’ trying to toy with a situation. At the end of the day you’re a forgettable loser.

When i see people getting into serious arguments on FB or anywhere on the internet, where both parties look stupid no matter who is right (like our sortie here), and someone interjects with a witty/sarcastic/ironic comment I always find they bring levity and perspective to the argument. I often see such people labelled as trolls.

When i see someone having a bit of friendly banter in places such as warzone, i often see them labelled as trolls as well.

I suppose this was what I was thinking of when I made my comment in defense of trolls originally, as I find the line between trash talk/banter and trolling to be in the eye of the beholder.

As an Iowan, let me tell you from experience that I can tell anybody to 'fuck off' all I want. That does not count as defamation or slander here. I forget the exact legal definition, but criminal offenses need intent and it would need to harm some ones reputation in a real way, and it would need to be a demonstrably false insult. No one can get in trouble here for telling someone to 'fuck off.'

Defamation/libel/slander isn't just insulting someone. It's more like falsely spreading accusations that they've committed a crime, and it's got pretty broad exceptions for public figures and such.

American speech protections are among the strongest anywhere (with political speech being practically sacrosanct), so I'd recommend studying law somewhere better than Wikipedia in the future.
