One guy I played in an auto game was Vanellope von Schweets, I think he was pretty high on the ladder but I forget the exact numbers

Here are my thoughts at the moment:

A.) You need to be a certain level to unlock higher pre-requisites. So, it shouldn't be a problem that he is playing not-so-great players at the moment.
B.) Auto-Games are a good way to learn the basics of the game (already said)
C.) Just playing Strategic 1v1 will help you get far. Many of the players only good at strategic 1v1 are very overrated, because they do well on the single-template 1v1 ladder. But try out some other settings as well (team-games for sure!)

Team games. Hmm. I'm in a 2v2 right now and it's pretty cool, but I don't think I'd do it with anyone who isn't a regular teammate of mine if that makes sense. And since I'm still pretty new to all this, you can imagine how many "regular teammates" I have :)
