It makes more sense if you follow tennis, which the whole AWP concept is inspired by.
In tennis, one has to pass through the qualifiers (unless they're ranked high enough to be in the main draw automatically) to be able to participate in the main draw of the tournaments. In cases where a player has to drop out of the main draw of the tournament for some reason (e.g. injury), a player then replaces him who had been eliminated from the qualifiers. That player is called a lucky loser.
