Just discovered warlight forums, and I see some posts about people retiring, particularly René Descartes. Nobody retires from this game, they just take long breaks. I wager he will be back sooner or later.
Everyone needs to take a break from this game once in a while to keep their passion for the game going.
Warlight also differs from other multiplayers games in that you develop a sort of a friendship with the people you play with. Most people know of other players and enjoy playing with them or against them, René Descartes, Karl. M, Merfi, Xenophon, Bottleneck, Ender, Sebb. I'm sure you will recognise at least 3 of the players I just named. Maybe it's just me that thinks this, I have recently been playing quite a bit and using chat to talk, broke up with my girlfriend a while ago and warlight helps I guess.

@Viking, I mentioned those names to show that players know each other (more or less), and that leaving this game is not the same as leaving any other game like any overwatch or clash of clans or something like that. Half the reason i play is for the chat, game gets a bit stale if i just play it for the game.

Who are those guys? Bottle? Karl? They sound familiar.....

The only legendary players who I think actually retired for good are Monsi and Piss Flaps the Sly. Though Piss Flaps said his retirement was cause the app doesn't exist for Windows Phone
