so since you have started playing warlight, Have your musical preferences changed?
I know mine have, not from WL but from real life, and just maturing, I used to be a fan of hip hop and rap, which I can still enjoy, however, ive turned more to 90's and early 2000's rock and alternative. like from Lil Wayne to the Goo Goo Dolls extreme.

Always have been a fan of pop and rock and roll from 1960s to present. But more of the pre 2010 stuff.

If my musical taste would not have changed, i would have stopped listening music altogether. Never stop evolving!

I mostly listen to jazz, blues and soul nowadys. Always been passionate about music and pop music. There are albums i listened to as a 5-7 old, declaring them as my favorites among my dads music collection. And today they are still among my favorite.

I regard the 80ies to be the pinnacle of pop music.

Best latest album i came across is "John Maus - We Must Become The Pitiless Censors Of Ourselves".
If you're into 80ies synthie sounds and like new order, new wave in general...listen to it, really sophisticated pop music. Sounds a bit like new order and the magnetic fields joining up, while being immensely fresh and original. Album was released on you tube i think and made the man an upcoming hope instantly. Maus studied music science, he knows his stuff and how tones can invoke emotions in the human brain, most of the songs have a classical structure behind it (gregorian chores being the main influence), which you dont realize unlesss you know it. Though the production is low fi, and very minimalistic you can only admire the complexity it reaches - really plays in the same league as joy division/ new order in that department.

(My first self bought albums as a schoolboy about the age of 11-12 were oldschool hip hop, run dmc and public enemy ones - hip hop nowadays is a serious threat to society in my eyes. And yes, i would never have imagined saying that - but i made my experiences with the years. Be careful, music is powerful, period. And making persons idols who are severely sick by strict scientific clinically terms is never a good idea, no matter which music they play)

My favourite music shifted from "Over the hills and far away" by Nightwish, to "Concerto for solo piano (Op. 39, nos. 4–7)" by Charles-Valentin Alkan.

My taste in music is very strange I guess. I listen to these genres: Jazz, Blues, Classical, Rock, Classic Rock, Rap, Electro(and many subsets), and some Funk.

I listen to probably more than that, but these are the genres I don't listen to:

Rap that isn't creative, and usually has terrible themes.
Pop.
Country.
Metal.

If it doesn't hit those 4 categories, I listen to it a lot. My preferences on the genres change, but at any given time I'll listen to a different genre. Most of this is because my father plays the blues and classic rock on his bass, so I grew accustomed to that music. I'm a trumpet player, so I play and listen to Jazz and Classical. Recently the new music for the electro scene has been pretty good. (Madeon, Tristam, Pegboard Nerds, Haywyre, 7MD, all great musicians) Rock and Funk has more to do with the fact I grew up when alternative rock was great (Foo Fighters, Metallica, Soundgarden, Audioslave, and Red Hot Chili Peppers).

I will listen to Metal, I just don't enjoy it as much as the other genres. It's too much noise and not enough musical substance imo. It has some very interesting parts, but I just can't listen to it often.

I don't understand an aversion to pop music (although this modern stuff is balls).
It's called 'Popular music' for a reason. I love Michael Jackson. Leave me alone!

Well, Rap music is Pop music - as is Jazz. But i guess we could get what was meant.

Certainly there is uncreative Rap music as there is uncreative Pop music.

@DynamiteT

Or would you say there isnt one single rap group you would not like? I doubt that, guess we could find tons.

Argument solved!? ^^

@Ashirogi Muto

Old Joni Mitchel, i would not have expected that to come up here. Though she is not my kind of person overall, but thats a great classic tune and she is a very talented artist without any doubt at all. Song lives more or less from the chorus though, but that one is just brilliant and quite unusal for that time i think. Im positively surprised her name coming up here, gotta say that.

@Lolowut

If i would learn an instrument id learn the trumpet, beautiful versatile instrument that can make all the difference to an arrangement. And doesnt it just sound heavenly?

Couldnt agree more on the metal statement. Its in essence about who has the best technique. Any open minded reflected metal musician would agree on that (in fact they do;) - so very right, in a nuthsell: not much musical substance in the end. There is no whiter music than that. Personally i find it disgusting, though i can enjoy some awfully noisy heavily metal influenced rock music and you have to admit....quite a few of them can play some brilliant ballades.

"I love Michael Jackson. Leave me alone!"

I wont - yes, its hard to take it...hard to admit and certainly hard to find out to begin with: but whacko jacko was quite an outstanding unique artist. The mix of white rock music elements with the rhythmic foundation of his roots in black music and his rythmic vocal working is quite unique - if admittedly strange. He also had a hand for gnarly synthie effects. From what i know he mostly worked with a production environment anyway instead of real instruments...so thats not surprising. Also due to that the arrangements are also quite minimalistic when you look at the ingredients, but the driving rhythmic force he created from that, quite unique. There is a lot of substance here in my eyes, though the package is understandably too strange to take for a lot of persons. Quite a few rocky alternative guitar bands covered his classics - which says a lot and is quite amazing - if you look at how his music, in essence was all about creating a driving force of rhythmic elements (and was always meant to be mainstream, chart music). I dunno, if motown goes crazy and white, you almost have the definition of whacko jacko. And surprisingly it married benefitful. I do think thats interesting.

Keep posting the music!

@Colonel - That was what I happened to be listening to when I saw this thread. She's great.

@General - Not sure if you mean the song 'leave me alone' or just telling people to leave you alone... ;)

@Colonel: Yeah it's funny, I wanted to be a percussionist but the middle school band had too many percussionists so he put a trumpet mouthpiece in my hand and I made a really good buzz. Ever since then I've played trumpet. I love playing it because it fits almost every genre of music. You cannot say the same for every other instrument. As for Metal, I'd like to clarify something before someone jumps on us. There are some metal songs with a lot of musical substance; it's just not the norm. Just as I'll listen to rap so long as it is creative, I will listen to practically any genre so long as the song has creative musical substance. I went out of my way to mention rap, because it seems more uncharacteristic of my taste in music. Metal, Pop, and Rap seem to have a very big trend of having very little to no musical substance.

I always thought my music taste to be rather bland. I used to prefer 90s hip hop and decent pop, but now I like listening to rock that's roughly older than a decade, specifically Weezer, Van Halen, and Bon Jovi.

I agree with the Col. never stop evolving. I was a metalhead growing up. Then I was given a box of old records from my uncle. It was full of all the classic rock regulars. Pink Floyd was an instant favorite and acted as a gateway music to blues and jazz. Now jazz is the primary music I listen to but I've found things I like in every genre. Even a few country artists which would absolutely shock the younger me. I want to link about 100 artists but for now I'll leave it at my all time favorite.
