Me and my bud were looking for asynch, turn based games we can play coop against AI (which is a bit more relaxing than playing angry juveniles). Is that possible in this game? If so, how would we do it?

Yes it is possible to create custom games against AI (there's no coop campaing though).

If you're using the browser version of the game, at the very top you can go multiplayer->create game. Then you have the settings page where you can set everything up. Click the change players button and then in the lower left corner "Team Game" to form (fixed) teams. Then you can put yourself and your friend in one team. Then at the top click the AI button and put AI players in the other team (any number you want) :)

It's quite complicated to find such options at start, that's true.
