I've seen members play in just about every game type there is. Myself and a number of friends, most of which have membership, play FFA and large team games on a regular basis. I think non-members play a lot more 3v3 than members, purely because that's the biggest team game you can have without membership.

I think that since Membership is a product, not an honor, there are really no standards. I have seen non-Members with over 5000 games and 60% win rate, and I have seen Members with 50 games and a 15% win rate.

What it boils down to is who is willing to pay for the added privileges. If you want to join the ladders, if you want to create better games (my personal reason), whatever. If it's not worth it to you, then don't do it. But clearly, for many it is. I think the idea is great, because it lets casual players have some great GREAT free fun, but it also lets serious players do more, AND Randy gets some money for all of his hard work.

And seriously, it's only $30. That's not really very much.
