Knowing that I am a pretty bad player when it comes to small sided strategy, and particularly my very limited range of templates that I even possess some strategy on, I am looking for a patient person who is willing to effectively tutor me in the ways of strategy.

I understand how stupid this looks, but I think it is probably the best way to find someone willing to do it (if no-one's willing, then so be it!).

Requirements: Min. Level 55, ideally over 60. Patience and willingness to play lots of multi-day games with me.
DM me if you're interested.

But if you want to improve at strategy, you should join more strategic clan

1: any template, particularly Clan League ones.
2: direct message
3: That'd be great!
4: Yeah, I thought about that. But I love Diplo mostly, so I like my Diplo clan, but I also want to get my strategy a lot better, since most community events are strategy game type.

@riskyboy yeah, that's what I'm trying to shape TLA to be like, but the clan's in a bit of a shambles atm.

I would suggest playing the same templates repeatedly first, just to gain a basic understanding of picking, expansion, etc.. There's no point in learning a whole bunch of templates just to grab the basics of strategic gameplay. Stuff like Biomes of America with the layered bonuses, are a total mindf*ck if you are just getting into things. It's doable, but much, much harder than it needs to be.

So the most obvious way to accomplish this is through autogames and the 1v1 ladder. I'm not saying do everything this way, that gets boring. But start your learning focused on a single template. Once you got the basics down, you can always expand the principles to new templates. Also. If you really wanna make the best decisions possible, yes play multiday. But that's way too slow for practicing the basics. RT games are where its at. 5 Minutes is enough time to think turns through, unless you are hard-core analyzing your opponent's many possible expansion routes over a number of turns.

There's a bunch of guides out there too, that you could look at. This is a decent collection. https://www.warzone.com/Forum/168132-strat-guides

On a side note. Don't push the clan to adapt too quickly, it works better to encourage participation in strategic events, preferably of the more casual variety. I would say avoid events where you will be frequently paired with people from Masters/Lynx/insert other eliteish clans. You can definitely learn some stuff from those games, just by seeing what they do, but they are not appropriate competition for your clan, most likely.

The problem is that it's no fun to be repeatedly curbstomped by people who are almost literally playing in their sleep. So look for competition at a similar level first. You improve the fastest by being constantly pushed to take little steps. It's an easier adjustment, and vastly more sustainable.

edit: I'm no great shakes, with a couple of respectable ladder finishes. If I wasn't borderline inactive due to interests and RL, I would have tried helping you out, since you show actual initiative. Best of luck!

edit 2: I know in the past it was possible to invite high skill players to play games with you, and talk over a few bits of the game each time. I'm not sure if this is the case still, but it's worth pursuing with a little buttering up. Most people are happy to play towards a mostly free win, if they have the time.... ;)

Avoiding good players as koala suggests is totally wrong. If you play bad players, you will just get on their level or slightly above. If you don't mind losing try to get games against good opponents, watch and analyze every turn of the game and ask if something is unclear

That's not what I was trying to say.

My point is to not focus on competing with high skill players (yet). Especially as a clan. Because stuff has to be sustainable. If they wanna get hard core about improving, then yes, by all means go ZBD. But most people don't do that. And if they were like that, they wouldn't be asking here...?

If we really want to argue semantics, their goal should be throwing down with "decent" players, at least players trying to improve. I don't remember mentioning bad players anywhere at all. If this is in reference to the autogame suggestion, I outlined my specific reasons above. I also think it can aid in practicing counting, since picks are more... diverse.

Additionally. We could argue that the only goal is to practice appropriate principles. To that end, it literally doesn't matter who you fight, because the goal isn't to beat your opponent. It's to play accurately, given what you end up with each turn.

Even with that, at least we confirmed that picking good players to lose to can still be viable as a learning strategy.

I can teach you on Small Earth. It's very basic, but it does provide a quick and effective template for improving your strategic play. Once you master the basics on a small map like that, it's easier to implement them on a larger template.

I don't mind helping people improve if they're willing to put in the work. I'm far from the best player, but definitely good enough to teach anyone the basics of a large variety of templates.
