Season XXXVIII is drawing to a close, so it is time for us to start thinking about the template on which we will play Season XXXIX.

We will be going back to the normal template choosing process for this season. As a reminder, this process is broken into three phases as detailed below.
Phase 1 - The community can nominate templates for the seasonal.
Phase 2 - The template panel will prune the submissions down to a small number.
Phase 3 - Anyone who has completed all 20 games in any one of the last 3 seasonals (Season XXXVI onwards) will be allowed to vote (no alts). We will resolve votes using the Dowdall system- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borda_count#Dowdall_system_(Nauru)

Please consider the following while submitting templates in Phase 1:

• Quality of template
  
• Finish in a reasonable amount of time
  
• Diversity of settings (WR/SR, MA, fog levels, armies per territory, income cap etc.)
  
• Diversity of maps
  
• Diversity across seasons (i.e. don't repeat previous seasons)

Deadlines
Phase 1 - 11th January 2020
Phase 2 - 20th January 2020
Phase 3 - 27th January 2020

There are nearly two weeks until the template submission deadline, so if you are working on a template or have a new and largely unplayed template that you would like to submit make sure you have tested it extensively with many test games, ideally with players who have experience creating or testing strategic templates, as those are the types of people that make up the template panel. For new templates it might also help your case to post multiple several games to help the panel get a better sense of how the template plays.

• Archipelago Brawl: The first pick is overpowered as it both grants +1 and combos with another ftb. The template also has some other balance issues.
  
• Basileia: There are better 0% SR options; the big +5/5 bonus is a do or die option; random move order may not be a great fit for this template.
  
• Battle for Middle Earth: Template still needs some improvements; there is no incentive to get card pieces; large map could lead to long games in some distributions.
  
• Belarus: We just had a WR season; luck on leftovers can be a factor.
  
• Black Sea: There are better 0% SR options.
  
• Cat Fight: We just had a WR season; WR brawls (especially with low income) can get quite luck dependent.
  
• Northern Vanuatu Islands: No template or game link was supplied.
  
• Pangea 1v1 Bomb Card: Bomb card doesn't really work in the template.
  
• Phobia WR: We just had a WR season; slightly more luck dependent than some other WR templates.
  
• Post-Melt Antarctica: There are better 0% SR options; it has traumatized malakkan.
  
• Saudi Arabia: There are better 0% SR options; pick phase can be rather luck dependent.
  
• Sri Lanka: The map layout is awkward; strategies can be a bit one-dimensional for 20 games.
  
• Trophy of Alexclusive - Concordia: 0 armies stand guard is almost always a bad idea for strategic templates; emergency blockade and airlift cards are similar.
