It was a decent game, neither of us played amazingly but I'm sure we played alright. But what I want to discuss the board, what do people do when there are 3+ FTBs and all have available counter-picks ? Is there an accepted strategy? I was trying to decide whether to counter all three, or pick a safer bonus and counter two, or maybe even risk it all.

And maybe turn this into a picks thread? I seem to remember Unreality did something similar relatively recently.

Well on this board the only ftb that was safe on turn 1 was CA and America. The expansion there is slow and SA poses a great threat on turn 2-3. Antarctica was just stupid to go for unless you really knew what you were doing and trying to surprise your opponent. Scandinavia would be a decent ftb if only WR didn't have a warlord that could immediately threaten it. My picking strategy would be to secure a dominant position in CA, SA, ANT region and pick a safe bonus like CR that could counter scand ftb in the long term. It is likely that fighting in the CA, SA, ANT region will begin early on I wouldn't worry about the opponent expanding in greenland so as long as you secure a dominant position in that region with similar picks to yours 1. SA 2. WA (somewhat safe-ish).

EDIT: CA america was not a safe ftb but your opponent being both in West US and SA would cause him to lack safe longterm expansion and if he was not in SA, you could blockade in CA and expand there so it was not likely to be that much of a problem.

Yeh, I agree with what you're saying, but CA wasn't safe - in terms of counter-picking it was just as vulnerable as ANT aside from the wasteland in West US.

I think in retrospect I'd go for something like you're suggesting and I really like the idea of Central Russia, what about Africa - would you leave it alone completely?

Yeah, what i ment about CA is that it is less likely to be threatened straight after picks so you would be able to capture the bonus (unless of course there is a counter from west us)

a board with two ftbs, one directly counter-able, one not. My opponent decided to go for the classic (1,2 and then 3,4,5 on the second ftb) I predicted that and went 1,2 and 3,4 with my 5 in Scandinava. This made him gets screwed on picks and allowed me to win the game.

This is a board with no ftbs of significant value. My opponent decided to go for the Antartica counter and moved to CA. Guessing wrong was his fatal flaw. I knew Ant would be countered and did not invest heavily in it while he wasted troops blockading it. The game was over at this point.

=D just joking Grigs well played on a shitty board

@green - in case of 3 FTB I would obviously go for the safest one :)
in 1st game it would be Scan + Greenland. Then SA, Antarctica, Africa as counter (I would assume that my enemy will choose Antarctica over CA, since it cluster with CA witch is better than US).

In the end if I get Scan+ Greenland + SA, I'm still in good position, because I can treat CA.

Even with possible counter in Russia, My enemy won't risk elimination, so he's not going for FTB, and I'm moving all in to Columbia

In the second game I agree with Timinator. Also Mario should try to get EC

EDIT: I was trying to decide whether to counter all three, - that won't be best idea. You end up having 3 useless bonuses :)

EDIT2: reshuffle - don't agree. Sometimes you may end up having very interesting game with 2 cluster bonuses like this one:

I don't like olinek's picks at all.

I'd be more likely to pik the same 1/2 he did followed by

3 SA
4 AA
5 S Af
6, well, I'd make a 6th pick, that's for sure :P He didn't. I think 6 would be CR.
