Hey, I have a few scenarios ready to go for diplomacy games, a post WWI Europe scenario, a Eurasia scenario during the Napoleonic Wars, and a couple of pre-WWII global scenarios.

I have a few regulars, but to be honest we're in a rut. The same players seem to team up in every game (no matter what countries they happen be) and then the games devolve into round after round of these coalitions allowing one of their members to essentially run the board.

Am I out of the mainstream here, in wanting diplos where players act like countries and protect their interests rather than just helping their friends go for the win?

There used to be two forms of Diplo. One was called Diplo/Diplomacy and was a FFA with no rules; where using the chat is a big part of the game. There also used to also be quite a few RP / Role-playing games. There, the goal was to, well role play a country or ruler similar to what you describe.

Not sure why*, but the RP games seems gone, and the Diplo games now have lot's of rules, with some diplo games being quite similar to the old RP style. My point is that the games are still there, but a bit harder to find.

*I think it was around when levels was added, as most RP games used to end in a VTE, thus not giving any points.

Oh, also if you want to spice up the Diplomacy game, try using mods. They are quite standard for diplo games nowdays

There's and enormous amount of people interested in diplos, and only a few who exhibit "empire" behaviour in every game they play.

I love roleplay diplomacy, but I usually don't join a diplo unless there is a custom scenario. The main thing I like about diplomacy is that if you have one of the worst starting positions in the game, but are great a deal-making, you are still able to eviscerate the competition because you can become one of the top players without getting people angry or getting a coalition formed against you.

From what I remember, boots were the biggest problem with diplos. 1/4 to 1/2 of the players would boot turn 1. I have no clue why this happened but it lead to some pretty funny diplo clan prerequisites like "Boot rate <40%"

40% is nothing. I've been in games that required a boot rate of 10% or less.
