Define "best". Some armies have incredible strength due to sheer numbers, others due to very advanced technology. The US army combines this, for instance, making it such a destructive force. Another important factor would be discipline, which further contributes to morale etc.

Usually efficiency, physical and psychological fitness of the individual soldier, advanced technology and high discipline make for the best army. A small, tactically superior, army will defeat any big untrained army. See Spartans, Alexander the Great or nowadays Israel's wars.

it's difficult to say but nowadays it really all depends on surprise and air superiority, which is why I believe the US army to be the victor in this race. Countries such as Russia, Germany, Israel, for instance have close to the same technology. Certain countries need different technology and tactics as well, much like in a desert you would need different functioning weapons than in a jungle.

China has the largest army in the world. The People's Liberation (!) Army of the People's Republic of China counts millions of soldiers. (still looking for the exact number.
And I'm unsure about the others. The UK? Saudi-Arabia?

Any of the states with nuclear weapons have the capability of nearly complete destruction of any state on earth, so if we are going no-holds barred, then the nations with the most destructive potential are United States, Russia, United Kingdom, France, China, Israel, India, Pakistan, and DPR Korea, in approximately that order. With the possession of nuclear weapons, the strength of the rest of the military would be relatively obselete.

I'm also assuming that we leave any peace treaties out of the equation, as many countries have agreements with much more powerful state militaries for assistance in war.

If you count the sheer numbers, and leave nuclear weapons out of the equation, China is the best (2,3 million). The US is second with 1,38 million, then comes India (1,3) and Russia (1,24). But the US spends ten times as much money on their army as China does.

Moros, good point but that is exactly what I was saying. If you say that numbers is the lone factor for "best" then no question. But as you pointed out , a well trained army of skilled "warriors" can take China for example anytime.
