Yes, if the first "hi" leads to an actual conversation then ok, but if you've played enough games you will see open games can go something like this:

Player 1: hi
Player 2: hi
-no chat until end of game-
Player 1: gg
Player 2: gg

This is when I wouldn't say gg.

I say gg if it was a gg usually

I would say I really enjoy conversations with Marcus Aurelius and especially his British humor

I've never really known when an appropriate time to say gg would be. These days, I will generally say gg if it was a fun game or if my opponents and I were evenly matched throughout its duration. I like to play this game for fun so I dont really say gg if I win because I think it comes off as being overly arrogant, but, im not sure if thats better than not saying anything at all. If there was something specific I liked about a match, I will try and strike up a little conversation about what I noticed and try ending it on a gg.

I have seen the same booting/surrendering patterns in my QMs as Thomas. I have also seen a bunch of higher level people just surrendering during the picking phase. Ive never known whats up with that but it definitely upsetting since it just inflates my actual rating. I probably just need to keep working on my rating but I really wish more players were talkative in their games.

I think it depends how well the actual game goes. If it was a stomping then I think gg could be taken as rubbing it in. Thats not how I would see it since they probably won by skill but not everybody thinks like that.

I usually try to say hi and more, but qm is sometimes too quick to talk a lot 😅

I do anounce my defeat by "you got me" or "you overpower me" and gg before I surrender.
if I win I say gg and thanks 😊 with a smile.
