Smoky black, like many other cosmetics in other games, costs so much money because it gives you a better chance of winning. You will start with 10 ATP instead of 5 at the beginning of games. The best comparison I can give you is having the astronaut suit in Fortnite. It makes your assault riffle shots more accurate. Smoky black allows players to both tell everyone that play they are rich and be better at the game. My hunch is that people who have Smoky Black won many, possibly most, of the coins they used to pay for the color. It makes sense as a high-cost item since coins should be redeemable for something. Smoky Black stretches out the coin farming game for some time.

I've seen people who have smoky black. I don't think all of them really play coin games much, and there's a lot of adults here; it's reasonable to assume that some of them (and the members) are intentionally supporting Fizzer financially.

The two main reasons to consider buying smoky black:

1. I gave money to a lot of greedy corporations (especially Blizzard). Nowadays I like looking for games from smaller companies/indies and supporting them too. They need it more than MegaCorp, LTD. Fizzer does this as his job, I've given him in the realm of $27 USD or so, which is a bargain. I've spent much more time here than most games I bought up front. (I have 4 accounts in the mid-high 50s.). If I was not a broke guy going back to school, I'd probably look at getting some colors (or even membership) eventually.

2. Almost nobody has it, though I think it might be more common than some of the other custom colours due to its status. So if you were to end up with smoky black, it's highly unlikely that you lose the color to another player through the normal means.

Obviously, point 1 applies to any purchase.
