I read the settings and it's still "who makes a stupid mistake first"

Does perfect play leads to stalemate?

Why don't you play a game with one of the good players out there and find out yourself.

Kael, that game is not against a good player. It's against someone who made the error of attacking first early on, and you didn't even take advantage of your opponent's early error.

With commerce enabled, a city is worth it iff it lets you gain an army advantage before your opponent can finish you off by amplifying their advantage. Optimal play here is 100% predictable and therefore attacking never makes sense until/unless your opponent has made a mistake. Duel can only be won off of chance or opponent error.

I get that you want to focus on strategy in a very minimal environment, but Duel goes so far as to throw away all strategic depth in the game. Try Small Earth instead if you want to focus on a still mostly predictable map that at least isn't boring.
