Hello all.
I would like to turn to the subject of music. I'm sorry to upset a great deal of people, but I have no interest in Rap, Dub step, or anything along the lines of that. Rock and Classical takings will be accepted, but I will like to focus on the type of music I like most; Jazz.
Jazz I particularly like, for many reasons;
1.) I was in the Jazz band for First, Lindero Canyon and then the Roosevelt Jazz Band, for seven years; alternating from trombone, clarinet and Baritone Saxophone.
2.) I actually like the idea that a Jazz band is only as strong as its worst player, and now, you practically need only to rely on yourself if you want to do well I the Music Business
3.) You need some talent to play in a Jazz band. Most of the singers these days, (from prior experiences) rely on heavy auto tune to sound "good" and all Music is nowadays is a ton of random sounds put into one song.
4.) The overall feeling of the Jazz songs inflect a mood that actually sounds and influences emotion. I think Classical does this particularly better, but still Jazz has retained some of its ancestor's mythic sounds.
5.) Many people have misinterpretations of Jazz, thinking it is only a Ding, Ding, Ding type of music. I have become a fan because my typical Jazz impression before was the same thing, at entirely did not meet my expectations the first time I heard a Jazz tune.
6.) Jazz has improved relations between Whites and African American people, because Jazz musicians consisted of many extremely good African Americans, which helped improve the opinion of them throughout the time Jazz was considered popular.
These have been my observations.
Now, here are my favorite composers and the songs they created;
Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue, Duke Ellington
April in Paris/Night in Tunisia, Count Basie
Sing Sing Sing, Benny Goodman
Moonlight Serenade/In the Mood, Glenn Miller
malagueña/23 Degrees N, 82 Degrees W, Stan Kenton
Haitian Right Song, Charles Mingus
Giant Steps/Lazy Bird, John Coltrane
Four, Miles Davis
Blue Rondo ala Turk/Take Five, Paul Desmond or Dave Brubeck (whichever you prefer).
Jeeps Blues, Johnny Hodges
Dexter Gordon
Cantaloupe Island, Herbie Hancock
The Chicken,, Jaco Pastorius
Frank Rosolino
La Vie En Rose, Edith Pilaf
Charlie Parker
Blue Monk, Thelonious Monk
Birk's Works/Manteca, Dizzy Gillespie
Art Blakely
The Entertainer/Maple Leaf Rag, Scott Joplin
These are some, out of the many composers/songs I like. now it's your turn, jazz lovers. Please tell me your favorite tunes. Rock and Classical will be permitted, again. other types of music will be frowned upon.
Thanks.

Jan Johansson was a Swedish jazz pianist, still famous in Scandinavia. He made a double aldum where he played simple interpretations of Swedish and Russian folk songs. It may be the best album I've ever heard.

Miles Davis - Generique, Salt Peanuts, So What
The whole album 'Miles Ahead'.
I don't know if you know George Gershwin, he's a composer who spanned several genres including jazz. I guess Rhapsody in Blue is most jazz-like because it's instrumental. He has a ton of songs that were covered by later jazz musicians, both singers and instrumentalists.
I find I have to listen to entirely instrumental music a lot before I start to really like it, and I haven't paid a whole lot of attention to jazz.

Don't want to list my all-time favourites, cause the list would never end.. but i cannot stop listening to two live recordings lately - maybe not "jazzy enough" compared to all the Ellingtons, Millers, Mingusses and all the stuff you posted, but they for sure wake lots of emotions in me (most likely because I had my moments in jazz/funk/rock bands as a bassist, and I still miss that a lot):
1) Raul Midon, Richard Bona - Jazz in Marciac 2011

2) Weather Report Live at Montreux Jazz Festival 1976

Also: Piazzolla has strong jazz influences. Same with those other artists on my list.
Congratulations on successfully embarrassing yourself, though.

I like anything played by Charlie Parker. I was actually in my high school's jazz band, but I wasn't really good enough to go on with it after that. And what a great thread idea! You have an excellent taste in music :)

Shit I wish I knew this post was here earlier! I love jazz, and have played in my colleges jazz department up until it was discontinued this semester.
This guy is a Finnish jazz trained pianist, and does some really amazing work, you should check out his videos.

As for myself I play vibes and drumset (for jazz) and I've done a little marimba work in a jazz setting, but that's all I've played for jazz. I play a lot for classical/other literature. We have this awesome jazz club downtown and I love going out there to both listen and play.
