My computer crashed when I installed inkscape.

But 99% of the warlight map making tutorials use Inkscape (I know of only one which is for Adobe Illustrator). I think that you may need to address the problem of your computer crashing, rather then simply avoiding it. Try installing it again, and if your computer crashes a second time, ask for help about the crashing problem. Who knows when your computer might crash next.
