So I've seen Skyfall mentioned here a few times. While I personally wonder if a movie that new is appropriate for this type of list as we have not had an opportunity to see how well it holds up over time, is it really that good? Might have to put it on my weekend "to-do" list...

-Aventure: Indiana Jones 1 and 3 (2 and 4 bored me, I didn't really like the plot and the "extra" characters were really shallow).
-Action: Don't Get It.
-Animated: Don't remember last one I even watched :S


And "The Artist" (revival of Silent Film) was the msot suprising one to me, because I really did not expect that to be as good as I enjoyed it.

Inception was a great movie due to the fact that is was completely unlike a nything before it. It defintley drew from ideas from matrix however but was still fantastic

but no one has mentioned, slumdog, crash, the departed, letters from iwo, the pianist, shawshank, platoon, deer hunter, Doctor Zhivago, pul[, one flew over the cookoos nest, elephant man, marty, on the waterfront. comeon i coulda been a contenda!

where is the culture

I'm probably not clear on the minor differentiation between the various forms of animation. I thought (most likely incorrectly) that anime was short for animation which would encompass all forms of cartoons. Sorry, old dude here.

i forgive you my son. Anime is japanese cartoon, and things like animations are called cartoons if they are tailored to the younger age. With more adult programs like family guy or athf, they are called like animated tv shows/sitcoms/comedy. They can still be called cartoons but that would be almost always said in a derragatory manner in reference to the show. (for adult animated tv)

- Mikkelsen, if you're talking about Orson Welles' The Trial then you are so wrong. That film is great. Almost for the set design alone. It's so claustrophobic, it translates the atmosphere of the book brilliantly.

- Burgoo King, all the films you mentioned are middlebrow Hollywood (of varying quality), with the exception of Elephant Man and On The Waterfront. And if you're talking about any other 'Crash' than David Cronenberg's, you're talking about an absolutely awful, pretentious, worthy, didactic, ridiculous, schmaltzy, ridiculously implausible mess of a movie. It stole a name and an oscar from much better films and should be wiped from history. Don't get sniffy about culture if that's the best you can come up with.

Unless you just took those names from some wikipedia list of 'films nominated for the most oscars', and this is some subversive humour, in which case you win, I bow to you sir.

- Trilussa has the most solid list there, very classy. Nice variety. Much respect. I also prefer R Dogs to Pulp Fiction. Though they are equal in most respects, the plot of the former is economical where the second is sprawling, without being more complex. On the other hand, Samuel L Jackson.

- I am disgusted and appalled that Crank 2: High Voltage has not yet been mentioned. If you had seen it, you would know. It is undeniably the greatest film, nay, piece of art, that man has ever produced.

Conclusion: Everyone is pulling in there own direction!

Ok Guys name three films that have somehow influenced/affected your life and give reason/s why!

My list:

1. Bridge on the River Kwai (Lean).
The film for me highlights the awesome power of stubborness and the belief that you are right that you will not give in even when you are in a vulnerable position. It also highlighted the danger of the dogmatic adherence to duty and honour, both valuable traits but so easily mutuated into some thing quite horifically stupid that results in mindless actions. The continuing clash between camp commandant Colonel Saito and British POW Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guiness)is such a rich characterisation of too colliding cultures with the captive gaining the moral and mental upper hand over a broken Bushido warrior. I've always admired the personal sacrifice one can give to honour and duty but wary of where it can lead ultimately.

2. Lawrence of Arabia (Lean).
The brilliance of David Lean in all his films is quite awe inspring. I think this film really started my love affair with films and cinema photography. The spectacular scenic shots and backgrounds are really quite breathtaking coupled with the earthy characterisation and gritty reality of petty fueds and high diplomacy. This was the age of great enigmatic film stars: Alec Guiness, Peter O'tool, Omar Sharid, Anthony Quin, Anthony Quale, Jack Hawkins.

3. Ice cold in Alex.
Through the background of WW2 in North Africa we see a small medical team retreating form the onslaught of Rommel through the desert where they pick a mysterious "Afrikaner" who turns out to be a German spy. The brilliance of the film shows the gradual development of true comradry and friendship between all as it is revealed that the true common enemy is the desert. The film's greatest ability is to demonstrate how supposed enemies can look beyond their differences and see the beauty and charm of each others cultures developing a mutual respect, admiration and ultimately understanding. A real human film. This is one of the first film's that gave me great hope about humanity's potential aspiration.

I know they are all war related, but I am fascinated by war. Maybe that's one reason why a play Warlight!

@burgoo king- just because a movie came out recently doesnt mean it's not a classic, Matrix revolutionized the scifi industry almost as much as starwars

I do admit, the Matrix was probably the most orginal sci fi movie for more then a decade (not counting inception, which personaly, i found orginal, but made no sense). Not only did it have awesome special effects for its time, but it's plot was very good.

whats wrong with anime? lots of awesome stuff there. especially from studio ghibli, but plenty of other stuff aswell.

i find it strange no one mentioned anything directed by Darren Aronofsky yet. all his movies are brilliant.

My favourite movie of all time is the Gary Cooper Beau Geste. Can't find it anywhere to watch again though!

Last night I watched The Cincinnati Kid, a 60's Jewison Poker drama set in the 30's featuring Steve McQueen. It was good enough to watch, but the anachronisms were appalling - you don't see that kind of sloppiness in period movies anymore.
