"burgoo king- just because a movie came out recently doesnt mean it's not a classic, Matrix revolutionized the scifi industry almost as much as starwars"
A classic has to be a classic, it hasn't to be a revolutionary film.
Examples:
Manhattan is a classic, but not revolutionary at all.
Avatar isn't a classic yet, but it was somehow revolutionary.
About Matrix I might say that is a cult movie, but I don't think it can be considered a classic.
By the way the only sci-fi film for wich the word "revolutionary" is spent properly is 2001: A Space Odissey.

I liked Trilussa's list too. American Beauty and Resovoir Dogs are two incredible movies.
Two movies not mentioned yet:
4 Months 3 Weeks 2 Days. Super powerful. Extremely well told story about life in Communist Romania.
and
Beasts of the Southern Wild which is still out in theaters but is easily one of the best movies I've ever seen. Nearly flawless.
X - I do mean Orson Welle's The Trial. I was a teenager when I saw it. My friend's dad made us watch it with him. I'd never been more bored. It's still my worst movie experience. I'm sure it's a great book and film, but I was making a list more about personal experiences rather than subjective rankings. I thought that'd be more interesting to talk about, but it didn't exactly catch on, so.

a classic, is not necessarily a classic film. In fact i wouldnt even classify it that at all. A classic is a movie that has been out of theatres for a substantial amount of time (that is a definite quality) and is generally accepted with positive reviews at the time and later in time. A classic can have qualities of being ground breaking but they most certainly do not make it a classic. THe matrix came out like 10 years ago, and there is no way in hell its a classic yet. A classic is a adjective related to time. Like "oh that was a classic movie, i remeber seeing that as a kid" Like star wars is a classic now, and thats agreeable. But its been like what 30 yrs? Yes a decade is a relativly substancial amount of time but in terms of movies history length I dont beleive it is. Also the matrix is not a cult classic or movie. I dont know if theres a difference for you. Anyways a cult movie is one that didnt recieve a tremendous amount of attention and thats pretty much the opposite of the matrix. being that it generated an ungodly amount of money. it most definetly is not a cult anything and 7-10 yrs will be a classic.
x your pathetic, the fact that you think those movies are middle brow is giving me a stomach ache. You're telling me that the deer hunter is middlebrow? That proves to me that you have no taste. the acting, plot, screenplay, and picture were outstanding in those movies. All having varying strong suits in the mentioned qualities. Its disgusting that you think for example one flew over the cuckoos nest or platoon are middlebrow. Have you even seen all of those? or are you just speaking about the 5 that you actually saw. Stop speaking out of your ass, you disgust me

i do agree with what HMS and Burgoo king said. I think that i needs to be around 25 years for it to be a classic, but some movies, like Jurrasic park (19 years old) can arguably be consindered a classic.

i literally spent half an hour replying and then i deleted it, and i'm sure as fuck not writing it twice, i can barely believe i wrote it once.
suffice it to say that burgoo king knows almost nothing about films, including the words 'classic' and 'cult', and his arrogant dismissal of everyone else's taste only highlighted how much of a poseur he is.
you even fail at pretension. the word you're looking for is cinematography, buddy, not 'picture'. unless you're talking about the aspect ratio? 'screenplay' encompasses 'plot'. and please name the great. acting. TALENT. that appeared in crash (2006), ludacris? "asian woman #2?
mikkelsen - i have a huge boner for orson welles and i really dug book so in truth im a little biased on that one.

I'm disappointed no one has mentioned what is (IMHO) far and away the best movie of all time, Seven Samurai by Akira Kurosawa. It simultaneously invented and perfected an entire archetype of movies, the group adventure.
Other inexcusable unmentioneds:
The works of Wes Anderson, but especially The Royal Tenenbaums, which flip flops with The Big Lebowski for my favorite comedy of all time depending on my mood, with Super Troopers coming in at a close third.
The works of the Coen Brothers, who have put out the most consistently high critical acclaim movies of the modern era, especially the aforementioned The Big Lebowski, but also True Grit, No Country for Old Men, Raising Arizona, Fargo, Miller's Crossing, the list goes on.
The works of Charlie Kaufman, Eternal Sunshine is one of the most beautifully romantic movies in a long time, and Synechdoche, NY is the most deep philosophic examination of the human condition and what it means to be mortal of perhaps any movie ever.
Quentin Tarantino. How has he of all people not come up yet? Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill, Death Proof, Inglorious Basterds, everything he does comes out pure gold.
There's certainly more artists I'm forgetting, especially ones who've stopped working like Kubrick, Bergman, Ford, etc.

god forbid that this thread shouldn't be a definitive list of the greatest films of all time.
the biggest disappointment is how neocentric it is. though on reflection that doesn't surprise me.
