There are a few of the maps I have seen that I'd like to change the bonus regions on to make the game more balanced/interesting, is there a way to download the map and alter it?

Not without the mapmaker's permission. It's his work after all.

Yeah, only the mapmaker can download it.

I would love to be able to download and fix some of the popular ones (some have missing connections, etc), but you really can't.

And also it wouldn't be a good idea doing so as it would be too easy for someone to attach a virus to the svg file, or for a virus on the user's computer to attach itself to the svg.

It would have its pros and its cons, but I always thought that it would be interesting that, if mapmakers give their permission, Warlight could let the people who wanted to download the svg file of the maps.

I think it would be a great idea for people who have already created an SVG template of a map to share it so it can be easily tweaked.

You have nothing to lose and only a possibly awesome map to gain.

I for one would love to toy with a project for a 'large earth' type map but find the task of drawing all of the lands from scratch a little daunting

Not an issue. Not even remotely an issue. Server side virus-checking before saving a file upon downloading it is not only common but trivial to implement.

Map theft. There is the big problem with it that would stop any form of map sharing/editing by other users impossible.

And Good Kid, trust me maps are made the way they are because we made them that way. Want a more balanced map, go make one :D

Why are people so concerned with protecting 'their work' ?

Are you generating revenue from your map?

Our whole world is built off of using other people's work.

When you need to write down a note, do you go cut down a tree and make some paper, and a pencil, mine for some grafiet, etc ?

Does warlight make you rewrite the code every time to upload & utilize your little artwork and have it work?

Mugzy, your comparisons don't make sense since people do make money for those products and people spend money on them. Thus they are earned and not simply handed to you with no effort involved.

The concern is that somebody else is going to "improve" the map and take another (likely skilled) map maker's work as theirs.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who was attempted or succeeded in making a map, and aimed for the highest possible territory quality. Those who do make maps like this know that its ALOT of hard work, usually taking a couple of months and lots of research to finish. That is why some people do not want a random stranger taking the map, changing some settings that the creator did not even think about, and publishing it under their name.

That being said, I'm sure there are some map makers who may let you modify their maps, you just have to ask and say exactly what you plan to do.

What? When has someone ever made money for making a Warlight map?

Only for fixing connections and name corrections. I think it would be a good idea. Instead of downloading the map, perhaps access to the map editing page would be better.

The map creator should still be able to approve it reject the changes though. You could have people sabotaging maps otherwise
