Hi!

I created an own Single-Player game where I made it an exact replica of the "Small Earth 1v1 Auto Dist", same game settings but me against an AI. I always win easily, even if I happen to get extremely bad starting territories.

However, when I play the same game against real players in Multi-Player, I get crushed most of the time, at least if I meet a player of Level 25-30 or above. So it seams like the AI is not really smart. It never do any really strategic moves, it mostly tries to get as much area as possible and tends to distribute its armies evenly on the borders to its enemy. So its really predictable.

Real players (of high Level) play much more aggressively, creating large stacks and attacking more. And also think much more strategical. The AI seems to not think ahead to coming turns at all. What do you think, are there any plans to make the AI better, and what level is it playing on now? I would guess somewhere around Level 5-10 at most...

The only AI that comes anywhere close to reasonably approximating player behavior is Wunderwaffe, and that's because Norman programmed it based on some of the same principles in his strategy guide (http://nghood.com/warlight/strategyguide), which is widely distributed and the gold standard of strategy guides for Warzone.

a player of Level 25-30 or above
Level is for unlockables, not skill. It does tend to correlate with skill a little bit because more experience = more levels. But if you want to get a grasp of their skill, better proxies include their win rates (esp. on 1v1), QM ratings, and ladder ratings with the ladder ratings being by far the best signal of these three.

are there any plans to make the AI better
None that have been announced to the players. The AI was open-sourced a few years back and that's how we got Wunderwaffe in-game, and that's the last I've heard of any effort to make the AI strong. The AI is not a good sparring partner, although Wunderwaffe is good enough to play against when you're just starting out.

what level is it playing on now?
Prod AI would probably get crushed by most players with a QM rating of 100 or higher. Wunderwaffe, on the other hand, I think would compete well into the 200s or 300s in the Strat MME scene and would probably get at least 1200 or 1300 if it were to compete on the 1 v 1 Ladder. It can beat sloppy and inexperienced players handily. It's also beat decent players from time to time.

Hi,

Thanks a lot for the reply.
Yes, I saw now that I should have compared with a players QM rating rather than the Level.

Excellent strategy guide you linked to. To use the Wunderwaffe AI, is that a "mod"? I am currently not a member so I cannot use mods in my Single-Player games.

If you think the current AI is bad, then you should’ve seen the old original AI

We did have a really good AI, but it became self aware and decided it was a jeep. As a consequence all future AIs are now very bad.

Hopefully mod doesn’t become self aware, gc would descend in chaos...

Now, if Fizzer became self-aware, well... let's just say that last time that didn't end well.

It's not a mod. You have to use the Community Levels feature. When creating a level, you can select the "AI Type" (right by the button that lets you add/edit players in the level settings).

You'll have to create a draft community level modeled after the template you want to play on (you can't just import built-in multi-player templates as far as I can tell), set the opponent to the AI, and then (once you have the settings updated- at least to enable One Army Stands Guard) set the AI Type to Wunderwaffe. You don't have to publish the level, you can just Play it as a draft.

This should work fine if you're a non-member. I just tested it and have a draft level that I don't have the time to publish. Someone might have already published such a level. You will have to have all the settings unlocked though, and you do on your account for Strat 1v1.

Here, I published a MME vs. Wunderwaffe level so you don't have to go through the trouble: https://www.warzone.com/SinglePlayer/Level?ID=1382749

It makes a decent sparring partner when you're just starting out, but the AI has poor surrender etiquette. You always have to play to elimination! And just now I realize you probably wanted a SEAD level... /facepalm

That should be easier to recreate and publish though.

I just noticed members can use the wonderwaffle ai for autopilot now. Not sure if we could before.

We've been able to use Wunderwaffe on Autopilot ever since Autopilot was implemented, or at most shortly after. If you're using autopilot on a conventional strategic template, I strongly recommend Wunderwaffe. Prod 2.0 can still cost you a won game.

i might have overlooked the choices. All descriptions besides 1 were all the same so assumed they functioned in similar ways.

Wunderwaffe won't attack territories with 0 armies, making it useless in no stand-guard.
It also can't play sanctions, it doesn't understand multi-attack and... well, lets just say that strategic 1v1 is pretty much the only scenario it is good at.

There are few mods (you need membership to use it) which were trying to make good AIs (for example someone made AI for multi-attack, no fog), however it is very hard to make a good AI. Many players become "good" at most of the settings after playing more than thousand games.

Edit: it can play order delay cards and it absolutely trashed me on guiroma
