So your income comes from the number of territories you control, which is 1 army for every territory.

Everyone starts with 1 territory, and it is an auto distribution, so no matter what you pick as your starting location, you have the same chance as everyone else.

That's not true. In the case where every army/territory ratio is the same (1), the best spots will be where the quickest expansion is possible, such as in the centres of continents. In fact, bonuses are designed to have different army/territory ratios to cope with this difference, thus balancing the map.
