I know there wouldn't be some quick an dirty guide to picks, but are there any resources on general picking strategy or even more in depth strategy? I find myself always getting my top 3 picks, and I feel like that's a sign that I'm picking terribly. Any help?

Unfortunately there is none (at lest from what I know). But if you're looking for a ways to improve your picking strategy or skills in general, then the best way would be asking other players for help.
Maybe try to ask your opponent after lost game, consider joining a clan so they would help you to improve, or sing up to Skill mentorship program here http://warlight.net/Forum/Thread?ThreadID=53263

or try to put word picking into search box of forum. it will give you few threads where picking strategies were discussed.
