It's odd to see a 'US Regions' map without seeing new england, the (deep) south, the great lakes, etc., and instead there are cardinal directions that lack historical or cultural significance. For a war game, people might be less excited to fight for the west south central or east north central than for a traditional region whose name is used in everyday speech when discussing regions. Census data names are not how people talk. But maybe government officials might get excited about the names.
