New airstrikes in Syria take aim at Islamic State's oil money: U.S. airstriked and pounded Islamic State-controlled oil refineries in eastern Syria. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates joined in the strikes by piloted and drone aircraft targeting facilities. U.S. Central Command said there were a total of 13 strikes against 12 modular oil refineries controlled by Islamic State fighters. Islamic State is managing to sell less than 100,000 barrels of crude oil a day. That might be worth up to $9.6 million on energy markets. Speaking at the United Nations, President Barack Obama asked the world to join together to fight the militants and vowed to keep up military pressure against them.

The military did not, however, say how or when Shekau died. A spokeswoman for the country's secret police, Marilyn Ogar, said "the original Shekau is dead" and that the person appearing in numerous videos was an imposter. The United States last year put up a $7 million reward for Shekau's capture as part of its Rewards for Justice program and designated him a "global terrorist".There has long been speculation in Nigeria and beyond about whether he was actually still alive.

The killing of Herve Gourdel, a mountaineer who was kidnapped while hiking in Algeria, was a "cowardly assassination," a visibly upset French President Francois Hollande said Wednesday, but he vowed to continue the military operation.
"France will never cede to terrorism because it is our duty, and, more than that, because it is our honor." says President Francois Hollande. France joined the U.S. in conducting airstrikes on the Islamic State group in Iraq. Two days later, the Islamic State group called on Muslims to attack foreign targets, and the response in Algeria.
A group calling itself Jund al-Khilafah split from al-Qaida and pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group two weeks ago. It seized Gourdel in response to the call to kill the "spiteful and filthy French." It gave France 24 hours to end its air campaign.
The videos from the group were similar to those from the Islamic State group, which killed two American journalists and a British aid worker in recent weeks.Obama, speaking at the same meeting, said people around the world had been "horrified by another brutal murder."
"These terrorists believe our countries will be unable to stop them. The safety of our citizens demands that we do," Obama said at the UN meeting, which was aimed at combating the threat posed by foreign fighters joining extremist groups.

“People were really shaken by those beheadings,” Clinton said in an interview. “I think that the American people generally tend to judge the president by whether we are more secure and look strong,"
“I think they don’t support and shouldn’t right now…us getting involved in a ground conflict. That’s probably what they – ISIS – would like. They’d probably like that because then they could BLAME US,” he said
Clinton added that President Obama’s strategy to combat ISIS “has a chance to succeed.”
