The Spanish government is still trying to block Catalonia's referendum on independence. Are there still some neo-Francos in Spanish politics?

The problem is that Catalonian governor only talks about an utopian independency, he doesn't take into account that Spain has rescued Catalonian economy twice, and also a referendum would only be legal if every Spaniard voted, not only Spaniards living in Catalonia

Pablo, about the first part I am not sure, but your last sixteen words make no sense. It's about the principle of self-determination. If 51% of the people in a region want independence, that law says they should, even if 90% of the rest of the country is against it.

But in the constitution (the one that Catalans voted) it clearly said that sobereignty belongs to all Spaniards, not only to some of them. Also, some Catalans want independence because they think that they could still being in EU. (Obviously that won't happen)

As long as Catalonia doesn't ask anything from Spain, it is fair. If they want any benefits from Spain (currency included though that may not be possible with the Euro) than they cannot go independent based on a Catalan only vote.

And as you said, they think an independent Catalonia would use Euro. That's another reason to ban a referendum only in Catalonia.

I'm not saying banning a referendum. I'm saying a Catalan referendum does not override Spanish sovereignty as long as Catalans require anything from Spain.

Same situation in Belgium, but a referendum about the independence of Flanders is in Belgium political unthinkable.

Do you think 50% + 1 is a suitable majority for independence? I think that if you are forming a new country, there should have to be a more decisive margin than one that might have gone the other direction, were the election held the next day.

It's really weird after world war two self determination was all the rage. The powers that were thought it would end destructive conflicts like WW2 and WW1 happening again. Of course Russia wanted a more pan communist state so I am only talking about the west.

They were seemingly right, there has been no conflict as destructive since WW2 maybe that is because the nations became smaller and it was out of their reach to go on world conquest missions?

I was going to say there are so many people here who disagree with self determination and prefer big nation states or huge unions ... then I remembered what kind of game forum I was commenting on :p
