reverse order of airlift and abandon cards?: 2010-07-26 01:01:48

Wanted to gauge community sentiment on this idea. I'd like the airlift card to be executed before abandon cards -- it'd be nice to to airlift units you want out of a region before abandoning it with exactly as many units as you'd like. Granted, situations where such a move would be needed don't come up that often, but creating this strategic possibility would grant the cards slightly more utility in combination than in isolation. I would argue that a similar economy already exists between reinforce and abandon cards.

Any thoughts?

I was thinking of doing exactly that in a game recently, but I realized it wouldn't work. I'd be for it. This post should probably be in the suggestions forum, though.

Good point, I think it's just Randy's oversight.

ah thnx Randy, sry for the duplicate post (and yes, this probably should have been placed under features). hadn't considered airlifting IN before abandoning, but your logic makes a lot of sense. I'm guessing there's no easy way to make the engine aware of these two different circumstances and behave differently for each.

An alternative that would be far less powerful than airlifting and then abandoning in the same territory, would be to allow you to play an abandon at any point in your turn, but never after an airlift (or if you want to narrow that still further, never after an airlift to or from the territory you're abandoning).

This would allow you to move [x number] out of the territory and then abandon it on the same turn.

Yeah, I considered that when implementing the abandon card. One big reason that abandons happen before attacks is that WarLight does not have the concept of a card "failing" where you get the card back. If abandons could happen after an attack, you could lose the territory before the abandon. This sucks since you wasted your card, especially if abandon cards are very rare in your game. The easiest solution at the time was just to enforce the sequence. Allowing you to transfer-in-and-abandon creates more chaos too, and I tend to prefer predictability to chaos.

if you could airlift then abandon games would take at least 100 turns. a lot of times i attack their stack knowing that it cant be abandoned

@Pink -- Your point doesn't make sense. If you have an airlift and abandon card you can obviously abandon. Maybe you mean the number post-abandonment is not high enough to prevent you from attacking the stack (even assuming the opp added all his income), whereas if he could airlift then abandon, you'd still have to fear him using the abandon..
