Creating a tournament, but when setting the tournament start day (ie "Tournament will start in 5 days"), I get a popup that says:

"Time cannot be longer than 1 days"

Anyone know why or how to fix it?

Public tournaments have a max time of 1 day till start. If you want longer start times, use private tournaments.

There is the problem, however it also seems that you can't do private coin tournaments, or is there a way around that?

Set minimum level to 99 and invite people specifically.

Haven’t done it myself, but seen it done.

You can only put coins on public tournaments. You can just promise to give the winner of the private coin tournament some coins manually if you wish to use private tournaments.

The easiest thing to do is probably get whoever you want to join your tourney ready in advance and just make them join within a day.

Z did that which is when I ran into the problem of cannot be longer than 1 day for start day, which is not enough time to allow the invited people to sign up.

Yeah, 1 day is rather short for people to join. Ideally the limit would go up to 2 days.

Or maybe only advertise the tourney on the open tourney page for 1 day, but have the tourney be joinable from link or direct invite for a few more days (blue box concept from games).

Coin tournaments have been public-only since 3.7, which introduced coin tourneys, made public tourneys cost coins to create, and made coin tourneys have to be pure-skill and public (https://www.warzone.com/blog/index.php/2015/03/update-3-7-coin-tournaments/).

Back when this update happened, coins could be exchanged back for currency (1 coin = 1 cent, although iirc you needed $100 or $70 in coins to cash out).

So maybe it's a holdover from that era?

Since 3.7, the only other big tourney update was 4.09, which doesn't seem to be related to the restrictions around coins and public tourneys (https://www.warzone.com/blog/index.php/2018/10/update-4-09-tournaments-and-more/).

private tourneys are free to make, so since you're not paying taxes you're limited in features: no coin prices, no mods, no join prereqs, etc

I suppose Fizzer can just add the same tournament coin/tax system to private tourneys as he uses for public ones, but maybe the way stuff is coded in the backend makes that more complicated.

Is this a stated rationale or just speculation? It makes sense to not have prereqs in private tourneys since everyone invited to the tourney has been... invited to the tourney.

4.20, which added modded tournaments, didn't state why only public tournaments could be modded (https://www.warzone.com/blog/index.php/2019/06/update-4-20-multiple-push-notification-devices-new-color-modded-tournaments-improved-graphics/). It might be for user experience reasons as well, since the coin tax on tourneys (added in 3.7) was at the time understood more as a way to clean up public tournament spam (there were a lot of public tournaments that would never start) than as a way to raise "taxes" from tournaments. Requiring modded tourneys to be public could reduce the mod load on the site (since apparently mods have relatively high server load) and/or help make mods more accessible or make modded events more exciting.

Pure speculation

As for modded tourneys always requiring tax, probably the same reason as modded games need 3 coins per seat to invite a non member (more speculation): to cover the additional server resources required to run the mods

Ah that makes sense; private tournaments are always untaxed so there's presently no way to levy the mod tax if they were to be usable in private tourneys.

But easy workaround, like Z mentioned, with the level req trick.

I think you can add prerequisites to private tournaments.
Though invites override prerequisites and you can't join private without an invitation.
