Not long ago I came across a heated discussion about whether ancient Macedonia was a Greek/Slavic/another tribe. It interested me and I searched the web for more info but everything I found seemed biased in one direction or the other. I know there are some history passionates here, so maybe someone could provide me with a good link/book on the subject?
I'll understand a text written in English, Finnish, German or Polish.

The Macedonians were of Greek descent. The Slavic tribes came to Macedonia hundreds to thousands of years later. They spoke Greek, they had Greek culture and they participated in the Olympic games. The Olympic games allowed only athletes of the Greek culture to participate.
But the Macedonian name as well as the culture and historical figures have been abused and stolen in an historical revisional attempt to create an own identidy for the Former Yugoslavian Republic Of Macedonia. There is a lot of propaganda going on the side of FYROM since they decided to have that create their national identity, that it let to grave and enduring disput with Greece.
Serious scholars of history all over the world almost alltogether side with Greece, so its a conflict that shouldnt really be there, if it were about historical facts.

I wasn't going to post here as politics and historic propaganda has no place on this site yet myhandisonfire allowed himself to spread their greek nazi views and their territorial aspirations of bordering countries. Republic of Macedonia never had any aspirations of stealing anyone's culture, check where geographical Macedonia was and you will see that it is divided between several countries. Don't read everything you're provided find rational and different views and then judge by yourself.
Oh and by the way Ancient Macedonians didn't speak greek maybe you should check your sources my friend.
Anyways this is a free world and any nation has the right to choose a name that it considers fitting.

cheers

Dear Incaman

Same reason i am not arguing in the religion thread, I try not to argue too much on this topic either with you.
You needed only one post to arrive at Godwins Law which actually disqualified you enough.
I assume you feel hurt in your national pride (i take you are from FYROM, correct me if i am wrong), which would be sad for you, but you cant expect people to rewrite history, just because it suits your feelings better.
Schools in FYROM actually do that enough.

I provided a link to a site which has countless of university professors in all kinds of related fields backing my claim. Most of them arent even Greek and have absolutely no reason to risk their reputation by backing someones propaganda.
Greece never had any aspiration into former Yugoslavian territory, so thats a ridiculous statement, but its one often heard when talking with people from FYROM.

I leave it to the people to visit the site and make up their own mind about the topic, because what i take from your first posting, arguing with you will be fruitless.

You actually have a petition to Obama on the site :))

Anyway i as said i did refrain from commenting even when i read the post (but you couldn't help it could you, typical:) there is a lot of literature out there he can read on his own. I would refrain from reading any sites that are made from one side or the other as they tend to put only filtered information and are not very informative, unless you want to get into all that political stuff which frankly speaking I find absurd and boring.

Godwins Law has nothing to do with it it was just put as a adjective but i can always use another "Xenophobia", "Repression" would be two that are better suited i guess.
Nobody is trying to rewrite history that's just ridiculous. Alexander was not Slavic the Slavs migrated much later.

And yes I'm from Republic of Macedonia (a name your country has been trying with all her might to erase for the past 20 years :)

Cheers :)

Well, if you both agree Slavic history and culture are not the same as ancient Greek history and culture, it seems the only reason you are discussing anything is because of politics.

So what is the problem? Republic of Macedonia is a bad name? FYROM is not good enough?

I think the reason that Greece wants the name FYROM is to distinguish the country of Macedonia and the Greek province of Macedonia.
Personally, I'd say that, to me, FY is rather unnecessary if you're referring to the Macedonian state.

In that case I want the country of Georgia to change its name to TCOG (The Country of Georgia) so we all know the American state of Georgia is the foremost Georgia.

By the way, I agree with Incaman: any discussion that might possibly challenge the indoctrination I received from my country's nationalistic media or education system should not be permitted.
