Creativity and Tactics: The Zombie Apocalypse: 2022-02-09 01:00:04

Hello!

A long time ago, I created an exciting and unique single-player scenario. Quite unlike anything else I've seen in Warlight/Warzone. It requires a lot of creativity and tactical smarts, as well as being a bit of a puzzle.

However, when the AI was updated, it was no longer possible for it to work. It had to be retired.

Well, with the advent of Community Levels and the ability to revert to the Prod 1.0 AI, I was able to recreate it at last. So now you can play it!

This scenario got an incredible amount of love back in the day. See the original writeup here:

https://www.warzone.com/Forum/403587-creativity-tactics-zombie-apocalypse

If you'd like to experience a really unique single-player scenario which rewards a lot of thought and creative tactics, go try it!

It will probably require many attempts, because there is a lot to learn. (Including a little trick which involves slightly rewriting the DNA code for the antivirus to "optimize" it... I'll leave it at that.) However, each try will be much easier, as you learn the scenario and its unusual features. It's not actually a difficult scenario, once you learn it, and can be won every time.

To get the most out of it, however, and to play it as intended, you need to use a (self-imposed) Deployment Limit.

What does this mean? The Deployment Limit means you cannot ever deploy more than 10 armies in any given territory on any given turn.

This means that all your "Deploy" orders should look like this, no larger:

https://imgur.com/a/HxtvYrO

Of course, you can do this every turn, building up large armies.

Deployment Limits exist as a mod for Warlight/Warzone, but aren't supported as a native setting. So you will have to self-enforce this limit yourself when you play.

Of course, you can play without it, but that makes the scenario much easier and also much less interesting.

Enjoy, and let me know what you think! Most of the cleverness here, of course, should be credited to the map designer (Tenemide), but I think I made quite an interesting scenario out of the map they created.

Now make a COOP version of this.

You should include a link to a map. I just came here because it said "zombie apocalypse" and it captured my attention. :-)

Good idea on the coop mode. I actually did that before, and even once with three players and myself playing the "Mutagenic Zombies".

However, this scenario requires the AI Prod 1.0 to function, and that's only doable as a Community Level (as far as I know). Is there any way to do that with several players? (If so, I don't know how.)

ZombieSlayer, it's the second link in my post! Hit it and play it!

You should loop this song into the background music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ro51SuLyh8A

Au/Ra's "Panic Room"

Ummm. I think you can add Prod 1.0 or any custom-made AU to Multi-player game.
Pretty sure some guys would tell you more. Let me try to fetch them.

Only one winner so far!

Congrats to “alifenorm”, even though they finished it on EASY MODE.

Well done! Just figuring out workable strategies and learning the map is the first puzzle.

As for adding AI to multi-player games, you’ll have to let me know! I have no idea how that could be done.

We have a few more winners. Congratulations to those who are figuring it out!

How's your experience of playing?

Is anyone trying it with the deployment limit (makes it much more interesting and challenging)?

It's been interesting to watch people play this scenario.

Somewhat as I thought, everyone who tries it enough times to learn the ropes can finish it (all the winners tried it 8-15 times and won).

Any experiences here to relate?

1st attempt going in blind, took me 33 turns with the 10 deploy limit.

3rd attempt without deploy limit took 19 turns. With some optimization one could take it down to 15-16 turns.

If you are interested this map also makes it possible to create zombie scenarios.

Nice work!

I’ve played a whole lot of zombie scenarios with that other map, as well. It’s a good one!

It’s not as creative or interesting as this one, I feel, but still a very nice implementation of “zombies” in Warlight.

Lepanto31,

I got a chance to look over your run through the scenario. It was very quick and effective! And I can see how you can imagine getting it down to 16 turns or so. Well done!

However, it also illustrates why I don't think the scenario is actually all that interesting or challenging without the deployment limit. I definitely can only stand behind this as a fun and challenging scenario with the deployment limit in place.
