Banned on chess.com because I used an opening book in live games - didn't know that wasn't allowed.

What is an opening book?

A book in which suggestions for opening moves are given with their corresponding strength assumption

I assume they saw my initial moves were all along the theoretical lines.

Since I guess engines use opening databases to make their moves too it would have gotten lots of similarities. While I would never use an engine, once the program presumes I do, they will presume you're a cheater unless proven otherwise. Since that latter step is near impossible (proving otherwise), you'll be banned.

Almost like shooter games such as Enemy Territory (one of the few I enjoyed playing)where I eventually got such good accuracy that half of the games I got booted because they suspected I used an aimbot - which I didn't

You're allowed to use an opening book or references (no engines though) in online chess multiday games. So me using my opening book against you was completely legit.
Furthermore, I would most likely have won against you even without the use of any opening book. In fact, I played you without any opening book or game (ex grandmaster games) reference.
