Being competitively outstanding is no prerequisit to join Clan League.
In theory, yes- nothing in the design of CL (just a clan P/R league on 1v1/2v2/3v3 templates) prevents it from scaling to the entire active community. In practice, CL has barriers to entry that select heavily for top players. Fizzer hit on something (on Samurai Jack's podcast) when he said CL was for the "1% of elite players." I'm a mediocre player by CL standards, would probably have a tough time (2-4?) in Div. B... and I'm still much better than the average player.
To participate in CL (sign up and play all your games), you need:
- a clan that's got its act together,
- time availability to support a multi-month commitment, and
- enough skill that the clan will use one of its limited slots on you
All of these are pretty hard, relative to the degree to which people prioritize video games in their life. You need to find your way into or build a clan that's got enough dedicated individuals who care about strategy gaming, and you need to be someone that clan will put forward on their roster. CL's structure as a P/R league innately limits its player pool. The only low-barrier-to-entry competitive strat event is the ladder system (just sign up, get games, leave whenever), and we can see in the big participation gap between the 1v1/2v2/3v3 ladders how much of a burden coordination costs (even when you just need 1 ladder partner, and you make a very nonspecific commitment, mostly just to take your moves in your games) have.
I don't think a clan like Prime will have fun in Clan League. It's a lot of work only to get thrashed, and most of the players currently have no interest in strat play. From experience, I think it takes inordinate effort to take a clan that's fundamentally uninterested in strat and contains overwhelmingly sub-1500 (1v1 Ladder) players into one that will play in CL for two seasons instead of just collapsing in one or not bothering to join.
This is why I think an Interclan Ladder is something the community should build, as a low-friction competitive & casual multi-day inter-clan level event. (If anyone's interested, pls DM me. I have a good idea of a design but don't have the time to build it entirely by myself; if we can get 2-3 people, though, we could probably build it before CL17.)
How does it work? Do you have to inform anybody who has contact with you that you are a sex offender?
Yes. When I say "gg" it doesn't mean "good game" or "git gud" but rather "get away! groomer" which is what I'm supposed to yell as loudly as I can when I find out I may be within proximity of a dog. On the internet no one knows who is and isn't a dog, and that makes life online very challenging for a dog groomer like me.
