I think the game's rules are already well-established...
This time, no images. At all. Whatsoever. Zork was about visualizing and developing your own vision of the environment as well as having no damn clue where you are.

I'll set the background :

2143. A year that had thus far shone brightly on humanity and its empire.

The race's history was one of great diversity, adversity and unity. Throughout the 1st millennia CE, there was war and plague, with many bastions of society lost in the West. Up till the 19th century, there was great innovation, terrible exploitation, misguided pursuits, rising storms and tremendous rebellions, with the faint scent of peace becoming a wisp. But in the 20th century, Humanity took many wrong steps. War had broken out once more, but a different kind of war. Millions died, while billions were left to greave. The skies were polluted like never before, the soil was devastated to ash and the face of the earth bore almost irreversible scars. The 21st century say a shift in these primal ways, however.
There was all of these problems the older generations had given to them, but they overcame the troubles. The pursuit of knowledge and the knowledge of the past was there to guide them. And so they fixed the Earth, one nation at a time.
The UN was restored to its earlier state by 2063. After all, what with the recent breakthroughs in fuel efficiency and alternative fuels, there was no longer a petroleum crisis to argue over.
But the fact remained, these fuel reserves would not last forever, and the people of the Earth were only just unified. So from the ashes of the old space programs, new vessels were designed. Better vessels.
And they were built in the hundreds, and they took to the skies. First they colonized Mars and began small-scale terraforming. Then all of the industrial operations kicked in across the Asteroid belt and the Red Planet. And then a shocking new operation was launched.
Venus was colonized! The species of man had walked on its hellish surface. Even Venus was able of being tamed. With such a thing possible, humanity knew that their space expansion was something guaranteed, probably and destined.
And so new plans were drawn up. The new space government of Humanity - the Gaian Federation - went past the expected Pluto. The expected Kuiper belt, the expected fringes of the Solar System. They went to the stars. They sped as fast as they could to the nearest stars, seeking to prove the previous examinations of fertile planets.
It was around that time ( 2106 CE, to be precise ) that the Lunar bases were excavated. After weeks of decryption, the bases were proven to be of extraterrestrial origin. It wasn't long after that ( 2109 CE - again, to be precise ) that Humanity discovered the Galactic community after a small scuffle with E.T. forces in the Sankula system.
After decades of orientation, humanity was truly part of the Galaxy. The Gaian Federation was one with the stars.
But, in recent years, a new race has come about. These metallic-like lifeforms ( known as " Disciples " ) were unlike all the other races. They were stronger, they were larger, and they knew much more than most. A handful of species had already fallen to their corps, and the Galaxy's tensions with them were growing hotter by the second.

But this was 2143. This was a new year. Colonial yields of raw materials were vast this quarter. The various Gaian fleets had recently been bolstered. The colonial marine garrisons were higher in morale than ever. There was population explosions across half of human space. Earth was experiencing a Golden age greater than any it had experienced thus far. Is Gaia ready for the Disciples? Is ANY race prepared for them? Will they be the bane of multicultural society? Is there any hope to defeat them?
----------------------

You are a noble explorer and surveyor of the Federation. With your small, tight-knit team of scientists, soldiers and engineers, you deduce if planets are habitable or not. On rarer occasions, you also deduce the mysterious anomalies that human colonists come into contact with.

You are making your way to the Ramesses system of the Atlantis star sector when you receive a distress signal from the Zedong system - home to a jungle world that your vessel just departed from.

" Strange. " Comms Engineer Marvin James says. " These are Krayt transmissions. I'm pretty damned sure Nile is one of our worlds! "

- How do you proceed?
Do you head back to Nile to investigate the distress signal, or do you maintain your course to the Ramesses system?

EDIT : ( On a scale of 1 - 10, how awesome did that backstory make you feel? If impossible to rate 1-10, what feeling did it muster in you? For future reference. )

1. you got that the wrong way around I think. You TOOK OFF from Zedong, and are HEADING to Ramses.

As just about the only person who didn't post porn in the old one, I choose to go back.

*edit* as Genghis fixed it, the first part has no relevance on the conversation.

( just to move things along, I'll step in to do the next bit )

" If not me, then who? " The saying goes.
You decided to head back and investigate the Krayt distress signal.
You near the planet, and slowly drop back to less-than-FTL speeds.
" Captain, now that we're closer to the planet, the distress signal is patching in much better. Uploading it to your WristPad now. "
And so you listen to this now enhanced distress signal.

" Help! This is the VEV Dreadnought Yarg! We have crash landed on the planet Nile of the Zedong system of the Atlantis sector! We have been attacked by Desciple vessels and have experienced critical damage! If anyone can hear us, please help us! Our co-ordinates are eight-zero - they're - comms - can't - aghhH! "

" Well, you heard the message, Captain. A lot of Desciple ships took down a lone Vern Empire Vessel. And remember that last bit? They've already jammed the comms in the region. Those Krayts are dead. " Comms Specialist James says.

" No, the Krayts are well-known for their prowess in jungle warfare. It'd be a cold day in Hell before they lost a battle in their own home turf. Besides, we need to teach those Desciples a lesson before they pull any more shenanigans in Human space. " The aged Lt. Razh responded.

" Uhhh, if you haven't noticed, this ship is not much bigger than a Hong Kong-class frigate. Us and some possible stranded Krayts up against a battlegroup of Disciple vessels with a sizeable troop compliment? We'd be slaughtered in minutes. " the Specialist replied.

You're going to have to make up your mind. Should we really risk saving these Krayts, or should we turn back while we likely still can?

Owing to the non-cowardice of your crew, you steel yourselves for the mission ahead. As you approach the planet, you see that the Krayts are holding a small fortress called The Cave. Helped by the mad hermit Bane (see what happens when you are an idiot) they have managed to kill many of the ships using a laser gun.

You land and manage to evacuate everyone, including the mad hermit.

DO YOU:

1. GO TO GALACTIC HEADQUARTERS AND FIND OUT THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM.
2. GO TO THE LOST WOLVES HOSPITAL, TO TREAT THE WOUNDED.

( One person makes the choice, the other gives the consequences and the next set of options. Sorry, but I will have to render your new section of the narrative null ( however, I'm sure the next person might copy a little of it )

so I make the choice right.
And then the next person comes up with the narrative, and the next set of options.

Like:

PREVIOUS POST: Cave or no cave.

Me: Cave

Next: As the heroes enter the cave they find a cursed sword.

DO YOU
1 Pick it up
2 run away screaming

Yes, exactly.

However, as a precaution to keep multiple people ( and as such multiple contrasting authors in the mix, in order to keep a healthy diversity of flavors ) you have to wait after 2 posts before you can contribute again.

Player A posts their narrative and choices.
Player B posts their choice.
Player C posts the consequences and choices.
Player A can post again.
Player B can post again.
Player C can post again.

Ok, then...

As you decend to the watery depths of the Central Forest, a greusome sight awaits you. Like the Earth itself was trying to crush your force, there is a hideous smell of roasted Krayt flesh and sulphur. After seeing the frantic scratchings on the walls, you decide to flee.

As you escape the planet like rats from a ship, the planet explodes, cascading chunks of rock into space. Your second engine is hit. You have a 57% chance of making it to Galactic Control before it explodes, destroying everyone on board. Your second option is to use the escape pods, and destroy the ship using timed explosives once you reach a safe distance.

CHOOSE:
1. Attempt to make it.
2. Use escape pods.

After a brief discussion you and the crew decide to attempt to make it back to Galactic Control in the damaged ship. After all, you are all engineers and really good at fixing things. Also, escape pods are very slow and you would need to be rescued before the disciples killed you first. Here goes nothing!

By the way, I like the story and would give it at least an 8.
