I tried to look it up in the forum but didn't find anything regarding this:

When I upgrade the Advancement for additional Mercs during a Map according to my observation it doesn't seem to affect the Merc Camps I already discovered - is this correct? Aka the advancement is only considered for a) previously unconquered Merc Camps or b) Merc Camps in the next map?

I tend to directly start the next map and spend the AP there, but if it is that way it would be smarter to stay for a moment and spend it in the "completed" map than moving on.

I haven't tested it myself, but the consensus seems to be that it will apply to merc camps that you have yet to conquer in your current map.

I can confirm that we tested it and a) applies - newly conquered merc camps benefit from the advancements. You can easily validate it yourself using https://pkmx.github.io/wzi-levels/, where every merc camp's base armies are listed.

Thi is why you should spent your AP as soon as possible, I always do it while still on the just finished level. Saving AP isn't worth it

that's an interesting fact. I thought it applied only after the level, and to be safe ALWAYS upgrade on the finished level! if you've accidentally exited one before spending the AP, begin tutorial level, spend the AP, then abort the level

What I personally do though is the following:

* complete a map
* leave the AP dialogue open
* check in my local excel sheet how much AP I need for the advancement(s) I want to get next
* optionally press the "get 30% more AP for 50 coins" when I think it is worth it and it helps me to get that adv faster
* close the dialogue but keep the map open
* spend the AP
* update my excel sheet
* only then I know for sure which level of, for instance, additional mercs I have and what is the best map to do next (esp. whether to leave the normal map-after-map path and jump to a hardened level)
* double check open clan requests which I might still be able to fill
* only then close the map
