For all those people calling my comments dumb, bare this in mind. There are plenty of voting systems out there and when we have an option of 5 maps, why are we using first past the post?

First past the post allows for a winner to be chosen despite the majority of the people voting wanting a different winner. Using a different system, Rise of Rome might not have won last week. We don't know because we don't know what everyone's other pretences are, just their favourite. However, the other 4 maps combined had more votes than Rise of Rome, which is the problem with the current voting system.

Since there's only 1 winner, we can rule out the single transferable vote or proportional representation. However, it does lead the door open to other systems, such as the alternative vote.

On a side note, this week there is only 1 real world map, Cuba, so therefore it will get the preference of those who prefer real world maps and everyone else will have their vote split between the other 4.

I understand your comment, Clement. You guys might remember there was a similar scenario on ladder voting results earlier in the year. In one of the map polls, while Final Earth was the most popular choice compared to ME or MME, it was pointed out that the number of non-FE votes exceeded number of FE votes, and thus some, like Clement, argued that more people actually wanted it to remain similar to ME rather than change.

Usually in such a scenario, there would be a revote between the two most popular choices, so the people that supported the least popular choices can have their votes counted too, but here I think it would be tiresome to vote twice and I don't think its that big of an issue.

We wouldn't need to vote twice if we used the alternative vote as all we'd have to do is rank the 5 maps in order of preference.
