NLC is broken because two players do not get the same and equal opportunity to hit “Begin” at the same time

well that's not really avoidable in a game like warlight where everyone is checking their phones at different times so they can't hit begin at the exact same time.
in any case the timer doesn't start until the begin button is pressed so it's kind of a moot point - everyone has an equal chance to get first orders

That’s not true. No one ever said that.
Different game settings define the type of game it is. I’d say the game you invited some of us to falls into the just for fun category and not the strategic one.

it's strategic you just use different strategy than your template.
but it's fun too and that's a bonus

Automatic territory distribution just isn’t strategic. Manual is. Using the Hybrid Distribution 2 mod is in between.
Just as a chess comparison, if the pieces were randomly placed at the start of the game and both players had asymmetrical starts, there’s already an imbalance based on randomness. In chess 960, pieces are randomly placed in a symmetrical manner.
How players evaluate starting positions is a major factor in separating between average players and good players. There’s also gathering information of where opponents are and what the move order is (in cyclic games). Making it automatic distribution removes that.

no it just means that your strategy changes because you have control over one less thing so you have to factor that into your game plan

Without that information, there’s less of a plan. Also see my above edit. Pick evaluation is very important.
In manual distribution, you deduce where opponent is based on which picks you actually received. Rest of the game, you eliminate possibilities.
In auto distribution, opponents could be anywhere and just win anyway due to lucky picks, regardless of how good a player actually is.

Normal cyclic move order is strategic. No-luck cycle isn’t (because of bad habits it encourages). Random can be, it’s a form of risk management like low luck settings.

the only reason NLC is not strategic is because it places unfair barriers on players. otherwise i imagine it would be used in every template.
edit: losing 1st pick can have devastating effects and may be unfair
