1. If you complete Europe Huge and decide to not ascend, does the option to ascend persist? In other words, can you go back to other maps and later decide to ascend without having to complete Europe Huge again?

2. The reward for Hardened Europe Huge is an updater. What does this do and do I really want it (is the benefit worthwhile)? Or am I just playing the map for the AP?

yes.

updater is only useful if you play multiple maps, so no.

Otto is correct, just a little more detail:

In Phase 4, for lots of AP (20,000 I think) you can unlock mutlilevel, and scale it up to be able to play five maps simultaneously.

Updater lets you one click update all the levels you're playing.

You are a long ways from it being of any use to you, unless you've popped one of the rare multilevel powers, and even in that case it is only two maps at once and easy to update them individually.

Honestly, by the time you can unlock the Multi-Level advancement it's basically not useful anymore. In late P4 you become the bottleneck rather than waiting for hospital upgrades/drafts/whatever. I'm on my 5th SA and have never used Multi-Level.

I enjoy multilevel for a few reasons.

Playing multiple maps means earning more AP per day of play.

It makes Idle play more active, you have more to do.

And maybe most importantly, you can always ensure one map has enough cash to make auto-digging always in play, so no downtime between digs.

A nice phase 4 advancement, Autodig kicks off at 5%--if you have enough cash on hand that the cheapest dig takes 5% or less of that cash, then it claims completed dig artifact and begins the cheapest dig on the relevant map. You are digging 24/7 without doing a thing.

Honestly, by the time you can unlock the Multi-Level advancement it's basically not useful anymore.

When I had ML, I kept 1 almost finished level around for filling clan requests and digging at all times, and the remaining levels can be used to play on a level, start upgrading hospitals, and continue playing on the next level.
