My great, great uncle was a German soldier fighting on the Russian front during WWII. He was captured and placed in a Russian prison camp. He and two others were able to escape the camp, however while they were escaping the prison guards were alerted. One of the guards threw a grenade which killed the two other prisoners and caused my uncle to go deaf in one ear. He was able to get away and survive the war.

My great grandfather was in the US Navy. He had a wife and children. He told them that he would be deploying a lot and he did. When he died much of his family went to the funeral. Everybody was shocked that most of the people who attended were his affair families from his "deployments". He really just used that as an excuse to visit his other family.
