I was just curious as to how most of you stumbled across this game. Did you have to be convinced it was good? Was it love at first sight? Did a friend have to bagger you to join?
It has been a while ago now but I can still remember like it was yesterday my introduction to Warlight. I was having a few brews and taking in a hockey game at the girlfriends house of a close friend who returned for a visit from Edmonton (he had moved there to attend a University, but we both live in Vancouver). The Vancouver Canucks were getting steamrolled and my buddy gets up and turns on his laptop. Initially irate at his lack of devotion to the game and to his team, I immediately began to chirp him. "what, so your an Oiler fan now!?" Go back to Edmonton you (insert explicit here). Moments later I got up, either because the bathroom called or to grab a new beer, I cannot quite remember the specifics, but either way I saw this picture on his laptop that looked like risk on steroids.
For me it was love at first site. Being a history major and minoring in political philosophy I was enthralled that something like this even existed. I looked at his game (standard fog and Earth) and immediately noticed the depth of strategized involved. I thought to myself, "how could something like this exist and me not know about it." I then incessantly babbled off a series of questions to my friend: "how do get this?, will my laptop even support it? How does it work? He cuts me off, "you have to be invited." I got chills (somewhat of a dramatization) as what he was telling me reminded me a lot of the movie "the skulls." Instantly I felt further drawn to this game because of the cult-like exclusivity of it. The game was reserved for people who - way of recommendation/ screening process - were known to take strategy based games somewhat seriously and not for amateurs who type into google "fun games" - perfect! I repeat, it was love at first sight.
What's your story? Did you demand to be invited or did it take some convincing?

Blue, I always forget you were invited to this game by my brother's friend.
I dont really have an interesting story. I was invited by my friend who told me about this risk-like game that was invite only but super fun. I also agree the invite-only aspect made it seem mysterious. I joined hesitantly, since I was never a huge risk fan, but quickly became much more involved. I swear for a point I was making 2-3 games a day for weeks.
Also, the oilers suck, Im glad we can all agree on that.

I was introduced to it by a thread in the "Games" section of a forum I'm on.
That thread can be seen here:

We played a few games and tourneys as a forum (One of which BoringMetaphor joined and beat us all!) before most of them left. Only I remain (I'm finishing of some tourneys for G.K. also)

I came here literally the same exact way as Perrin. And I'm glad I did -- I haven't been back to the other game since.

Boring, yes, I forgot that as well. And yes, sometimes I still cherish the exclusivity of it. if everyone was limited to say 3 invites (although even I may have gone over that) people would have to be far more diligent in who they select. But interesting, to be honest, I was oblivious to the fact that people could invite themselves via access from other public forums.

My story is similar to that of Perrin's. There's a risk-like game in kongregate called "World Rebellion 2". Unfortunately, it suffers from server crashes. During one of these annoying periods, a troll spammed the chat, saying that there's this awesome game called warlight... While most trolls are idiots, this one happens to be genuine
(p.s. agaynondanishprince: thanks :D )
I've always wanted to play a multiplayer risk, but I never found one which had a large multiplayer base. As such, none of the existing online risk games really interest me...The ones that did, require payment.
The moment I played the first single player campaign i.e. the tutorial, I instantly fell in love with it :)

There was a group of us who had just finished playing an ORG that had lasted several months. Afterward, we would spend many nights just chilling in an AIM chat room. Eventually, one of them linked us to this game called Warlight, which they played, and I promptly ignored, writing it off as a useless time drain. After several occasions of waking up, looking at the chat buffer, and seeing that they had been up until 7 AM playing this game, I decided I had to try my hand at it.
I signed up for a narcotics anonymous group shortly after to cope with this addiction.
Only one who still plays besides myself is The Impaller. And he still owns me. :-(

Oh....man this goes back a few.
So it started out with my good friend TJ (he retired, but not after winning this crazy long game: http://warlight.net/App.aspx?GameID=1001356) telling me about this game saying, "Its like risk but digital and cooler". We were always really into the game of risk and other strategy games. I happily joined the game because it was my senior year at college and what else did I have to do? This is my first game, horrid i know: http://www.WarLight.net/App.aspx?GameID=1000677. Granted, this was back when Randy was only 6 degrees of separation away (TJ, FoShizzle, FoCho, DAMP, Troll, Randy) so you only played with people you know. I know we had countless days of sitting in the same room with all with laptops shouting at each other and messaging each other about secret alliances. Those were the best times, I was hooked and I haven't stopped since. It's amazing to see what this site has become since I started almost 2 years ago. I just remember when Open Seats came out, it was like he raised the flood gates. It instantly became 10x more addicting. Randy, you've done an amazing job and you really do follow through with the suggestions that people give and thats what makes this game better than any other. Thats my story of how I got started in Warlight!

haha, classic Ruthless. I loved the naive back-to-back 1 vs 2 attacks you had to begin your career. Ahh, nothing like getting owned your first game. I know the feeling. If we're giving shout outs, I must give Ruth some props for taking me under his wing and taking my game to the next level. I'm still learning from him today to be honest. Thats the other beauty of Warlight: its diversity of play. I've logged well over 300 games and I'm still learning better/alternative strategies all the time.

Well first off, I only read up to the first page, but I'd like to point out that I never got an invite from somebody, my story started with a simple game night at a friend's house, he brought out risk, i got re-addicted to it so badly, that i was looking for free versions online, found a website ranking risk-like games, and found that this one was the highest ranked, tried it, and im more addicted to it than even before.

Only one page here :) I first saw warlight over Newbie's shoulder before he became DAMP - I've known him since he was just a grubbie, became friends with his brother Paroxysm playing online games on BBS's back in the day. And then later Dowser (another friend from pre-internet gaming days) invited me to a game and that was all she wrote..
Now all of them have quit but I still play occasionally...Guess it's been well over a year and a half now, time flies when you're getting smacked down by really good warlight players!

I discovered the game via the same manner as a Mr. Kleyton Manning. Little did those people know, I have an unhealthy love of some turn-based strategy action and got hooked. http://warlight.net/App.aspx?GameID=1016436...first game. It's been nearly a year now...doesn't feel like I've been playing that long...although sometimes it feels like I've been playing too long :).
