I've been reading a book on the Balkan wars (actually the book seems to be a general history of the Balkans as a whole) and I can only guess why NATO bombed Serbia as it has only covered that when it posed a small bit of irony. The only guess I can make is that America and its lackeys were dismayed by the Serbian use of ethnic cleansing (Which the allies after WW2 used , and what both America and the Europeans used in the colonization of the Americas.)

People in the Balkans learn nothing and remember everything. The Byzantine empire , to intellectuals in Europe at the time was some great kingdom of Christianity that would beat back the Ottoman hordes and create a era of peace and would be a cornerstone of European culture with Hellenic principles and customs shown everywhere.

Well the intellectuals tried. But the great powers who facilitated the independence movements didn't want a dismantling of the Ottoman empire (because Russia would set up shop in the straits of Mamara) So instead we have A bunch of new countries instead of a empire and the ottomans held on till WW1

What would have happened if instead of a large number of smaller independent states gaining independence in the Balkans (from Austria and The Ottomans). One large Balkan Empire formed which modeled itself on the Byzantine Empire with Greek culture and principles?
