they say this season will take the storyline to the point where the last book ended (well, with some differences, but same timeline) and the new book won't be out till 2016.

so they will make the next season before the book is released?

Martin already told the producers of the tv series how the story should develop next and how it will end, in case he dies before he finishes to write the books - biggest spoiler of all times

And yeah, the tv series will overtake the books soon

RR Martins also said that the serie and the book are going to diverge greatly from this season to the end. Like people killed in the serie but not in the book, and vice verça. It is probable that the ending of the tv show will be different than the ending from the books.
