This is a world map project based on the game Victoria. There is a Excel spreadsheet with all the territories with a ID-number so it is possible that others can draw territories independently and merge into a final map(the user Knoebber and I tested this yesterday)

This is the result after one day:

http://img832.imageshack.us/i/vicktoriawarlightmap.png/

I made some simple suggestions of regions and how to connect territories by sea, should there be more/less connections? The original game has different scenarios from 1836 to 1920, so some of the territories belong to other countries/borders will look different than now.(esp. African countries)

We hope others are interested to get involved and get suggestions.

Yoo realize it is possible to vectorize the full-res image and have the SVG ready in a few minutes work? (Well, maybe an hour or two if you want it to look a bit better). It will probably not look as good as hand-traced one, but it'll be ready much quicker.

Also, responding to your question in the other thread:

> How do I for instance make Bahamas with many islands as 1 territory?

You draw each bit separately and then press (in Inkscape) Ctrl + + to join them (or Path -> Union, I think).

Here's a SVG for you: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10983006/vicky.svg

This is generated from the map without territories I found on the wiki you linked using potrace (with inversion and black threshold=0.8). Then I added IDs suitable for Warlight with a little script of my own. You should be able to upload this to WL and start adding names, connections and stuff (once you upscale it).

Bear in mind that I did not at all check if it matches the original map. Some territories might be missing, split, or very misshaped - you'd have to fix them by hand.

If that SVG causes any problem with WL, try this one: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10983006/WorldMap_LowRes.svg - it doesn't, however, have territory IDs set.

Good luck :D

Whoah that helps alot.... But warlight doesn't seem to take the one with id's it gives completeHandler 70::warlight.shared.messages.ServerException Error (0): WarLight Server returned ServerError
at mapDesign\MapDesignRoot_.as:HandleStoreVisionError()
at mapDesign\designer\Controls_.as:()
at warlight\shared\messages\Messages.as:UploadVisionReply()
at warlight\shared\messages\Messages.as:OnReply()
at warlight\shared\messages\MessagePump.as:OnReceiveMessage()
at mobileShared\Messaging.as:completeHandler()
at mobileShared\HttpRequest.as:completeHandler()

Any ideas on how to make that one work? or do we need to enter id's by hand?

I have worked with this map this weekend and it is on testmode and working, 2194 territories and 98 bonuses. Connecting all the territories was very boring! Unfortunately Europe is still crowded even if I removed a few provinces. Is there a way to shrink the size of the numbers?

One thing I haven't done is naming all the territories, I don't think I'll bother with it, it will take to much time. I will check the connections more thoroughly before making it public.

The bigger the original SVG is, the smaller the numbers will be. I think there's a hard limit though, it's probably somewhere in Help.

Hi, I deleted the map, I got some negative feedback from the admin/founder of this site. Now Warlight is going to charge 30$ for playing. I think Warlight has to hire someone to make new maps now...

30$'s is not alot for a good game.

and consider, the owner has spent many thousands on this game thus far, and if every current player paid 30$, he'd prolly break even, plus every bit of programming is done by him

300$+ a month, just for the server alone makes 9600$ he's paid out of pocket for this game, and that's not his only expense...

read comments on the blog and on several of the threads lately...

I fully understand that there is costs and that it somehow has to be paid. My issue is that members have also spend hours making different maps for free. Most of the maps are amateurish have a lot of errors but are still an asset for Warlight. If Warlight is going to charge money, I think the members should remove their maps, and let Warlight LLC be responsible for new professionally made maps.

wow, that's selfish..
you make a map because you want to play on it.. before as well as now, and when you upload that map to warlight, you are giving that map to randy *afaik*, and as i said, read the threads, he possibly will end up rewarding people that make maps, this is all new to him, as well as us... this has been a hobby for all of us.. you've spent many hours working on this map that you wanted to play, obviously.. Fizzer has spent considerably more hours, and his own hard earned cash, to *let you play* he's asking for a pittance after years of dedicated players *asking!* him to let them pay him for his services to let you play you're game.
now admittedly you don't seem to play a whole lot, according to your record, *and seriously, 6 games 3 boots???* so perhaps this game isn't for you in the first place.. in which case I'm not sure why you'd dedicate the time to making a map for it..

either way, I've lost my train of thought.. so /rant off, and perhaps I'll come back at a later time when i can reiterate more clearly, lol

I totally understand ricardi!

Why should he continue making or give away his map?
He wanted to make it; and if he now completes it he can't even test it like it was designed for because of the new restrictions.

Why making a map for Warlight when the map maker can't play his own map in the settings that would be the best!?

I think people need to relax a bit. Randy seems pretty reasonable, it's entirely possible he will come up with an incentive or bonus for mapmakers. The whole pay thing is only one day in. Let's breathe easy and see what comes of it.

Here's a potential suggestion. Players who make a map are allowed to design games with no limitations on players, settings, etc. on the map that they created, regardless of member status. That would provide incentive for people to continue producing maps, even if they aren't a member, and would generate more maps overall for Warlight, as I can see a lot of non-members designing a map to play on to allow them to still use their preferred settings, rather than forking out the $30 subscription.

I realize that there may not be any kind of infrastructure in place to set up these kinds of part-by-part tinkering of who is allowed to do what, but this could be a start to a system where people can pay small fees to be allowed to access certain member functions rather than pay one entire cost for all member functions.
