Because they hit "Begin" and did their picks faster than you? It doesn't actually count pick speed until you hit begin. It isn't when you join, it is when you start the turn.

Your opponent spent 1 min.

The timer starts from clicking begin (or once you open it, if you've it disabled), not from the time the game was created.

Check the speed. I did my picks in 10 minutes, he did them in 1d 18h.

Speaking of which, shouldn't the begin option have a choice of "only no-luck cycle games" on there?:

Speed is now the same, that's how long since the game was created you took to take your turn; Not the same as time spent taking your turn.

Menu>players will tell you the speed of the first turn.
