This morning the server was down for maintenance. But there was no indication of the expected up time. I just checked in, but I have no idea if I could log in earlier

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that part was also down at that moment.
And if in the announcement an expected time is mentioned, why not include this information in the 'server is down for maintenance' message?
